I was in a similar situation. I let HR know two months in advance.
At your level, I wouldn’t worry about it. Just give them plenty of notice (2-3 weeks) when time is up. Big 4 are revolving doors so as long as you are professional and give them notice, they will not hold it against you. I was at KPMG and we had a 1st year associate do the same thing. She all of a sudden had a federal clerkship and left. It was fine.
Give plenty of notice (at least the standard 2 weeks) as this is a great opportunity and they’ll likely want to have you back after (maybe even in WNT). I’ve had a colleague intern at the big4 I was at, then do a tax clerkship, then go to the irs, then go doj, and we welcomed her back every step of the way
Agreed that firms do not really care as long as you are not going to a competitor. I would say the vast majority will understand if you give at least two weeks notice and will relish a future high level connection
Is it a tax court clerkship?
Yes
What is the clerkship?
What do you want to do? Sounds like the tax clerkship is something you want and KPMG should want to hire you after you complete. Otherwise, you should be able to find another position, potentially even better, after your clerkship.
Thank you MD1.
