Where do you live? What type of insurance do you have? You should be able to find someone in network unless an insurance that no one takes. If you have out of network benefits, it’s also an option to pay out of pocket and then get reimbursed for a portion of what you pay.
I would say start by looking on your insurances website directory
Looking on psychology today is also a great way to start finding a clinician for you. The platform allows you to search by location as well as insurance and even area of focus. Not every provider is required to have a profile, but it’s a great start and can even link you to agencies/practices that you might not find otherwise.
There are always low cost options, unfortunately the system needs a lot of work and they’re hard to find. You’re insurance company should have plenty of options as well. Also checking with your PCP can be helpful.
Many private practice therapists don't have the staff or time to get certified for each insurance company. It is a real barrier to care. If you are employed check with your HR to see if you have EAP benefits. Look for people in a group practice - those likely have support staff that help with credential verification for insurance. Also, you can always use insurance flex spending or HSA accounts for payment. Don't be afraid to ask about financial assistance or payment plans with the therapist. Many do offer these options and can have it benefit them as listing those services as community benefit time which can be a tax deductible donation for their practice.
