Hi all! I’m looking to connect with folks who either work at Coinbase or have interviewed recently for the Business Operations and Strategy Manager or similar role. I am looking to schedule my first interview which I believe is a consulting style case. So any details you can provide, I am all ears. The next interview will be a presentation. Again if you have any experience/advice on this, I’m ready to listen.
Thanks in advance! Help me escape Deloitte pleaseeee. I want this job sooo much!

In my opinion, no. Production designers get the very last of the work and there’s not a lot of conceptual thinking or problem solving there. Get a junior designer or designer position at a firm that will give you real problems to start working on.
I’m a high end production designer and I’ve known people who have moved from production to design, but only if it’s clear from the outset that they really want to design. However, it’s incredibly frustrating that designers think they can all do production. Most are terrible at it and don’t understand the technical knowledge or have the attention to detail to do production well.
Agreed. Production designer is a technical role and you don’t have creative say on the projects you work on. A jr. designer role is def what you want to shoot for. Once you go down the production designer route it’s very hard to switch m. Another way to get amazing work in your book is to do side projects. You don’t have to wait for someone to give you a brief.
No. Unless you consider resizing banners "amazing work"
If you want to do amazing work as a designer you need to get hired as a designer. Not a production designer
Above is true. Some larger shops have the ability to move from production to a design position. Worked for me.
That’s true @designer 1 I’ve seen it happen as well. But I’ve also seen talented people get stuck in production designer roles. I guess there is no one way to get to where you want to go! How were you able to transition from one role to the other out of curiosity. Would love to know how to help people who feel stuck.
I don’t want to pigeonhole myself into production designer roles, I wanna make great work
Can you link to your current book? And what are your career goals beyond “doing amazing work” which should be table stakes for any driven creative? What kind of design are you interested in? You aren’t giving us a lot to go on here.
Like it’s been said, If it will give you a salary and let you work on your own projects and freelance design while learning the technical side of production, it could be valuable. But there’s a big red flag: in house marketing department. With a few exceptions, you’re likely not going to get access to big conceptual thinking or innovative design.
I’ve jumped from graphic design at small shops where I had to do my own production to advertising studio design to creative. The idea of in-house marketing to do design work, much less production never felt like the right opportunity to me, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t for you .
