Mental health takes priority. If you have the financial means to do it for an indefinite amount of time , then you can. Most people don’t. If you don’t have the financial means, you can be unemployed indefinitely in this market- but that’s your call
Taking time off, FMLA or any other short term benefits your firm offers should be the first step in my view
What qualifies someone for mental health leave? If they have PTSD or depression but haven’t been to the doctor recently can they qualify? I feel like they make it so difficult
How much effort and time are you putting into your transition?
By effort, I mean being intentional about preparation, presentation, delivery, and working your network to find exit opportunities that align to your career aspirations.
I was in a similar position and it took me almost two years to finally land an opportunity that I truly wanted.
The market is going to heat up this year so remaining employed would be my advice if you’re seeking an executive / Sr. Leadership role.
If that’s not your aspiration and you have six to eight months of living expenses in the bank then I wouldn’t tell you not to.
If you’re interested in higher level roles then I would find your way out. Organizations are not going to rank you high against competition who is gainfully employed while you decided to sit one out for a ‘mental refresher’
