Please tell my why you accepted that internship offer. Commute time should be a make or break when considering an offer. Your current commute sounds like it makes life suck
It is a long story.
To keep it short, I had no alternatives left (was let go from my previous firm at the end of 2017 busy season and was broke with no more unemployment funds and a piss ton of debt). I had a previous internship with this firm but couldn't accept a full time offer at the time because my wife lost a baby during the previous internship and we decided to be closer to a high risk specialist she trusted. I am truly grateful to get another chance with them (considering how last minute they got me in).
I have family in the Bay Area which saves a ton on rent (free). I figured I would get through the internship, hopefully get a full-time offer and officially move closer to the city in the summer before I would start full-time.
I take a 6:30 train every weekday morning. I try to catch a quick powernap on the way to SF. On the way back, I do social media, etc.
Let's just say Sunday is my favorite day of the week right now.
I used to have a 90 to 120 minute commute. It was miserable and was sucking the life out of me. I moved and now have a 15 to 30 minute commute. Complete game changer.
LA commutes are easily 90 minutes per way, on a good day. On a bad day - 2 hrs. Bay Area is not much better nowadays 😣 this is why the firm has to begin actively encouraging and training people to work effectively from home/remote. Win win situation, if you ask me. (Lower office rent, more hours spent working instead of commuting, happier employees).
4 minute commute
I have a 90 commute one way. I’m just used to it by now.
I had a buddy who lived on Staten island but worked in nyc. Car ride to the Staten island train...train to the ferry, ferry to NYC, subway uptown and then the footmobile. All he was missing was a plane.
Typically 45-60 minutes one way, but I like living outside the city and try to work from home a few days a week when it’s not busy season. Worth it to me to love where I live
1hr 20min train, 20 minutes on subway, 10 minute walk. Then a 12 hour day and repeat. That’s for a client not the office, so it’s temporary. I usually leave a little earlier and finish my last hour on the train
On average =55 mins in car, 45 mins on commuter train, 15 mins on metro train, 10 min walking, plus wait time for trains. If I hit traffic it can be another 30 mins easily. Usually easier in the AM total about 2hr 10 to 2hr 15mins. Going home traffic is worse usualky 2 hr 15 to 2 hr 30 mins. Used to do it 3x per week every week for 6 years, now only do it about 1x per month. Thankfully get to work from home most days.
Why are you working 12 hours as an intern?
60 minute train ride, 20 minute walk to office.
Commute to NYC is rough. But trying to live with my parents to save cash until I have some saved up/get a few raises and can afford to move closer.
My commute used to be 2 hours each way, 45 min drive to train, hour on the train, 15 min walk. I would work on the way in and sleep on the way back. Honestly, the job wasn’t worth the sacrifice as I spent so much money on commuting and then eating almost every meal out. I left and took a local job for a little less $, but am netting more than before without all the expenses
I used to have a 60 minute commute each way. I was also a first year tax staff bak then, so WFH was not really an option. Now I live 4-5 blocks from the office and could not be happier with the commute.
Ah well good luck and I hope you get your offer. Happy to hear some positive parts at least Reading a book or magazine always makes a long commute less boring and stressful!
Which firm? Also tax or audit?
PwC 2, car, public trans?
EY 1, Novogradac. Both. I don't travel to clients thankfully. All remote.
Not sure about your firm but i know that the Sacramento area job market is pretty good right now. Less traffic, cheaper living and only 2 hours from the bay. I have considered transferring to the area for family reasons and was surprised by how good the market is.
