Do not get discouraged. You will find something. Being 48 is not an issue, you are actually in your prime! Let me give you what I think may be happening without having too much information for your post.
1.- I work directly with my CEO and past CEOs call me every so often; I also meet and network with other CFOs. What I hear most often is that CEOs want people back in the office. Something tells me you might be looking for remote or hybrid positions which are getting scarce and more people are applying to a lowering number of remote positions. This will get much worse given the Trump administration mandate to have all federal employees back in the office 100%. Why? Because the Federal government like big banks and big tech are catalyst of how corporate America behaves. Feds are now asking contractors back to the office as well.
2.- you might be located in a smaller or what a call a tier 2 or tier 3 market. Let me make this clear, tier 1 markets are: NYC, LA, San Fran, DC, Boston, and Chicago. These markets have so much rotation that you are likely to find a position faster given the constant rotation. Tier 2 markets like: Tampa, Miami, Detroit, Indianapolis, Saint Louis, have less rotation and lower population so job hunting takes much longer.
3.-you might be in a location or industry affected by the Trump tariffs. Even if your industry is not affected, but your location is, it will affect you big time. Canadians have vowed to stop consuming Kentucky bourbon, and other countries are targeting products from Trump’s constituency. So if you are in a red state it will only get worse, much worse. Furthermore, because of the tariffs to come, many companies have prioritize increasing inventories to avoid the tariffs for a year or so which have left them cashless. No cash, no job creation.
For these reasons, I believe that everyone will be worse, but it will be even worse if you are in. Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Alabama, Colorado, and Michigan. This last 2 states does not seem to fit in the list but it does. Ford’s CEO just came out stating that the steel tariffs will increase cuts and they will have to fire staff (they have plants in Iowa, Michigan, Alabama and Georgia. Same for the other car companies which have a huge ripple effect on other companies. Colorado will be gravely affected because they produce a lot of cans (aluminum and steel) so beer and sodas will increase in price and people will reduce consumption. This means less jobs.
I highly recommend being open to changing markets if what I said applied to you (I know at 48 it’s hard because of kids and family). Forgetting about remote, hoping for hybrid, and open to in person; and industries that won’t be as affected by the Trump daily changes. Again, don’t be discouraged, I am just citing the realities which I know it is not what any employee wants to hear.
You may interview poorly. Practice Bradford Smart’s Topgrading book. Most important: dovetail your interview appeal with CEO’s stated strategy plan known from all sources at Sec.gov and trade publications.
Many of us are in the same boat. Trust me it's not you at all. "I could be wrong by saying this" but, I personally think many companies are waiting for the new administration to settle in specially with all the changes taking place with cfpb reform, budget cuts, government restructuring, and over all shake up.. companies just want to ride out to see how the Q1 will fall in place.. all i can say is keep believing in your self, not ever for one sec think that ur age is a barrier in any of this.. Just have faith and belive things will be OK (I know it's easy for us to think that way but hard to do) but trust me, it's a Strom we all going through. Apply apply apply apply and apply more and then more then more again till u get something. Have faith my friend, everything will be ok 👍 🙏🤝🫶
I am going through the exact same thing. I am 56 now and keep thinking it’s my age as well and after 4 months with sending close to 160 resumes out applying to open positions I finally filed for unemployment. You are right it doesn’t get you much, but I was happy when I received my first check this week. I am getting extremely depressed which is a new thing for me and I hate feeling this way. I just keep thinking things happen for a reason, something better has to come along, right??
I'm pointing out the obvious here, but it wasn't mentioned in your comment. If you're not getting out there and networking in person, you may want to consider that. As wonderful so sm can be, in person experiences are still far more memorable
Hi i am past 50 and 25 plus years in very senior risk roles. I kept getting denied too. Just stay positive. Try to offer some consulting thru ur network and also work with smaller subcontractors to keep engaged.
Going through exactly same situation. You are not alone. I hope it gets better for you.
Hang in there! You’re not alone, just keep chipping away and eventually the tree will fall. Best of luck!
Hang up there. The market is rough right now, so keep trying and maintaining a positive attitude.
Thank you so much!
Hang in there. I was 13 months looking at the age of 60. Keep plugging away. It will happen!
Why are you delaying collecting unemployment? I have always been advised to file as soon as you are able because there is a lot of bureaucracy to go through and if you do get hired you can’t collect retroactively and won’t get what you are due, losing money in the process. If you were laid off and are actively looking for employment, which is a requirement for collecting, you should file. You have paid unemployment insurance taxes your whole life so you should use the benefits when you qualify and need them.
where are you based?
my company does not have an office there but some roles are based in the US in general, dm me for more info
Hello, look up reselling on youtube and/or look up being a Spark Driver for Walmart (depending on your area), for your $$ needs. Reselling is a great business to start with very little overhead and it could potentially lead to it being f/t where you have freedom with your kids etc.
I am going through the same thing exactly. I am also 48 and have 25+ years of experience. I understand how this is getting you down as I feel the same way. Rejection gets to you. Good Luck to you!
