I can’t comment on cats but from what I’ve learned about puppies/dogs accepting a new family member is that it takes (1) time and (2) ways to separate them so the older pet can relax and the younger pet can explore

As a minor update, these two are becoming more friendly.

And there is hope for these two as well.
When I brought a kitten home my older cat was angry for awhile, it took a few months but now they get along great. Just give it some time and they will be okay.
I also can’t comment on cats but I will say when we adopted a puppy when my current dog was about 6/7, the older dog HATED the puppy. Would snarl at him every time he got close. After a few weeks it started to get better once he realized this puppy wasn’t going anywhere, and eventually they became best friends and absolutely loved each other. I’m not sure if cats are any different but hopefully it’ll just take some time.

My husband wants me to give the kitten back and says our son will forget about it. Ugh.

Do what’s best for the kitten, whatever that might be - staying or going. If the kitty is going to go, do it sooner than later so he can find his forever home.
It’s tough to bring in a new kitten with an older cat. Not that it *cant* be done, but older cats are territorial.
We brought a kitten home and our older cat marked all over the house. We gave it a few weeks and realized it wasn’t going to get better, so the kitten was rehomed (through the rescue). Older cat almost immediately stopped marking.
Agree with PM1 to do it sooner than later if that’s your decision.

Thanks all. Luckily the puppy and kitten are getting along great. Though the puppy needs to take a chill pill sometimes. She gets way too excited with the kitten, and the kitten isn't always down for that kind of play.
Our big girl hisses and growls. No attacking though. I'm just trying to give her all the love and kisses I can do she doesn't feel too jealous.
