What is a good salary for a director in NY?
Have an offer at Citi for 120K as an AVP in the NY office. Currently making 92K at my current role. Is this a fair offer? I currently WFH pretty much full time at my current role but it seems like this one requires 2-3 days in the office - and this is something I’m very hesitant about. Thoughts on how to approach this?

Honestly, aim for the top of the range unless there’s a solid reason not to. Salary bands exist for a reason, and companies expect candidates to negotiate. If you’re already performing around the 75 percent mark for the new role, anchor high and let them counter with data. Also, flip the script a bit: ask them what impact someone at the upper end is expected to deliver. Once they articulate their own benchmark, it becomes a lot easier to position your experience and outcomes right where you want to land.
That’s good advice
Ask them what differentiates someone between the low range and the high range. They'll explain XTZ experience or years or etc. Try to get them to talk more about the skills rather than experience. Once you know what expectations and skills they think you need for the high range, you can position yourself accordingly.

I think the math is a bit off here. Midpoint is where a qualified candidate will fall presuming they meet 100% of the requirements, with the understanding that many will not be at 100% off the bat, but who could get there quickly. Top of the range is offered to a candidate who has years of direct experience, who can excel from day 1, and grow from there.
Aim high as the saying goes, though be sure that you can speak to why you deserve the high end of the range. I don't think that "I am 75% prepared to do the job" will be seen as an appropriate answer.

But wouldn’t that be true if you meet 75% of the job posting, you’re prepared to do that? Of course you’d have to sell that you’ll get to 100% as fast as you can most efficiently.

I will keep this in mind. Thanks
Pay isnt just based on experience if that were the case half the rich kids with connections would start at $15 an hour the way we all do. You negotiate based on potential, skills, what you need to survive. Once you set a salary you may never make more. Most jobs don't give inflation or pay raises anymore. So people who come 3 years after you with less experience will be making more.
