This happens in periods of joblessness. I've had to deal with it. A few things that helped me:
+Gratitude. Thinking about good things, however small, when I couldn't sleep.
+Literally not thinking about my situation. The future can look bleak. Some days and some moments, I simply chose not to think about it.
+Good distractions for your mind and body. Walks, going to the gym, galleries, reading books that have nothing to do with work, all worked for me.
+Talking to a friend. Could be in person, a call, or even a zoom chat, reminded me that I was human and got me out of my own head.
+Remember that this is a hard moment now but it's not permanent. I did some beautiful, important, and lucrative things after my period of unemployment was over. So will you. You haven't lost your capacity for joy or for greatness and you will feel it again.
Make sure to do something happy and give yourself self-love whether it is a facial, a foot rub, or something every day. I wasted my time off being miserable and will be starting a new job soon, I know wish I had spent the 3 months off more positively. I've lost 90 days that could've been full of Joy and relaxation.
I’m employed at a toxic agency and can’t find another job and can’t sleep. Something will come up at some point. The market is terrible right now. Praying things change after the election and the start of the new year.
Is there a non-toxic shop? It’s just which shade of gray. They are largely all the same, but there are certainly some that no one should ever entertain.
I’m employed and still can’t sleep.
I’ve been there. At times like this it’s helpful to speak with the right psychiatrist. I resisted it forever. But getting in the right combo of Zoloft and Buspar, plus a little bit of Xanax for the really bad nights, have really helped.
That’s the chemical side.
But you can’t ignore exercise, and throwing yourself into the other things that make you, you. Whether it’s playing an instrument, a sport, your friends, yoga and meditation or some other passion, you’ve got to lean into that at this time. You’re not unemployed, you’re on an unexpected sabbatical.

Same but last night I slept and had a dream I was hired at a very cool shop. Woke up bummed.
Currently, I'm unemployed too. I was involuntarily let go and asked to leave on the same day. However, regarding sleep, I had the best sleep during the first week after leaving. But now, it's been a month, and like you, worry has started to creep in. Still, I keep reminding myself that in a year from now, everything will be alright.
Anxiety comes from focusing on things you can't control or the feeling that your fate is beyond your control. Do things that will give you more control. Keep working on your book or self pr or a random creative project that will get you attention. Put your energy on you as your next creative brief to solve- how would you get you hired? What new thing could you do to get you fame or noticed by the places you want to work? Write, create, get the momentum moving. I heard a psychologist say it's impossible to be anxious and creative in the same moment. Create in this time. You obviously have it in you, you got this far in the biz.
Me too

I know this doesn't help much, but you aren't alone. Hope you can get some sleep.
Never slept well in my whole career. I’m currently losing sleep worrying about what would happen if I WERE to be let go. No matter who tells me I’m not in any danger, I’ve had PTSD, (Post Termination Stress Disorder) for almost 8 years now, having been let go seemingly out of the blue. Being that much older and let go again, I very well may be done for good in this advertising world.
Same.
*Sends hugs*
I dropped out of a graphic design Bachelors in 2010 because of a recession, I went again 3 years after, graduated, survived the pandemic and the aftermath recession. Now I'm unemployed as well in what seems to be the beginning of a 3rd recession. Even garbage bottom of the barrel freelancing is hard rn.
Our options are: switch careers, or hang tight.

Been “fun-employed” for 2 years. Side hustles/gig-work paying the bills. Use the temp agencies, too. Here’s a few more thoughts on coping:
- don’t make job hunting a full-time job
- don’t apply blindly to every job (if you use LinkedIn premium, you can see how many applicants a post has; if it’s more than 150-200, there’s no point)
- use your network to make inroads with recruiters at companies you want to work at/for
- take up some hobbies or exercise to calm the mind
- go back to school; by the time you finish a Master’s or a second Bachelor’s the economy will be bouncing back and you’ll have a reason for the down time plus a degree to add to your CV
- know you’re not alone, it’s not you, it’s a bad period
- stay on top of tech, particular AI tools and how to use them
Time to look for new career. If money is not an issue do something less stressful and pays lesser. That's my plan moving forward. Been unemployed coming to 2 months now,
My husband has been unemployed for 9 months and I can’t sleep.
Always remember that humans were not meant to be enslaved by corporate overlords until the day we die. Enjoy your freedom.
I have been unemployed for almost 2 years. so many pending bills. Mentally am really struggling. Rejections have become the norm. Only maintaining sanity for my son's sake.
