I’ve heard the best way to ask about this is to ask people you interview with about their life, what they do outside of work. At one of my past agencies where works/life balance was poor, I would have had a sad answer because I didn’t have room for anything outside of work.
So that's the thing... they DON'T make you work overtime.
YOU make you work overtime.
Stop working overtime. Set your boundaries and log off.
I say this as I work overtime today
you're going to an agency. you will work agency hours.
This is true but there’s a lot of variety on what that can mean in practice and how much flexibility is available.
Mainly profitability, cash on hand, and average tenure.
You don’t want to work for a company that’s got a razor thin profit margin, just like you don’t want to work for a company that has massive turnover.
The first two you’ll have to ask about, the last one you can get a sense of from LinkedIn
No one is going to tell you about profitability in an interview. Just ask about client retention, new business wins, and employee turnover. Those are pretty good indicators of client satisfaction, growth and employee culture.
Agree it’s a leveling thing, and for an analyst level position (at least in my industry) the person interviewing the candidate is unlikely to have deep knowledge about profitability. But they will know about the basics of the business like new business wins.
