When is it best to leave consulting? Here's how I think about it.
First, are you enjoying it? If so, why leave (it can be a great life long career)?
Second, are you still learning fast? If not, you're missing out.
Last, what skills do most employers value? In my experience, this dictates 2 optimal jumping off points:
(a) 2-3 years in. Consulting "tool kit" is solid
(b) ~1-2 year into Manager. Employers value experience managing people.

Knowledge management is a pretty common function in companies that have large amounts of information. Knowing that, now look up people who work within KM within industry, you’ll notice that the majority of them have degrees in English, literature, or librarian studies. That’s because KM is the modern day library. Not to take away from the skills of a librarian as i imagine they probably have tasks that are uniquely difficult but these skills do not line up with those of a top consultant nor a top executive leader. MBB somehow have been able to sell their name and gather tier 2 consultants to do the job. The only difference between MBB KM and industry KM is that they will have you “compile” information instead of just manage it. So I would ask you what your career goals are? If it’s KM than MBB is probably the best career out there but if it’s to be a consultant working on complex problems or it is to grow into an executive position a knowledge analyst is not it. you are better off as a consultant at a tier 2-4 firm. Think you can get in and then work to transition? Think again. Look up BCG KA on LinkedIn and look at their career paths. It usually stops at lead KA. There is no KA partner or MD and rarely I mean rarelyyyy do you see a transition and if you do it’s usually to internal PMO. This is not meant as insult (as BCG reached out to me too) but the consultants at MBB are tier 1 with their top MBAs and KA are consider tier 2 to them and that’s why you will never see a Harvard MBA as a KA, but rather ex Deloitte, PWC. ACN with tier 2 or no MBAs. You may have MBB on your resume but you are not a top tier consultant in KA.
Well said! Food for thought, thanks ACN1🙏
If you’re client facing now, make sure it isn’t a non-client facing role.
Never done it but working FOR consultants seems like a recipe for a nightmare experience. Tough enough to work WITH them. Also, I enjoy client interaction.
Knowledge analyst is not the move dude. You’re a backend research person that services the consulting teams
Hm, ok. Nothing against who works as KA. I'm looking more from a fit angle. Mainly looks like the growth potential is limited.
It’s basically salary. An entry level client facing consultant at MBB is going to make significantly more money than a knowledge analyst. They will also have access to more perks, firm resources, senior leadership, growth opportunities etc.
I still think everyone has a role to play. I personally also don't put client facing over non-client facing although that's the norm. I know I may get pushback for saying this lol
