Just go with it and use it as practice. You can say no all the way up to signing an offer letter, so see what the offer is. Who knows you may be able to work a raise out of it. Or if you really don’t want to just tell them it’s not the right fit. They’ll move on very quickly, trust me.
As a hiring manager, let your recruiter know sooner rather than later as opposed to wasting the company’s time.
But my advice is in line with others—use the interviews as practice. Maybe you’ll change your mind by the time you reach the final stages.
Ask yourself why you applied to the role in the beginning? What moved you to action on it? Adjust your search accordingly to avoid a repeat.
While I’m a big fan of practice there are a hell of a lot of people out there that need positions...not to mention the time it takes for the hiring folks to do interviews, etc. If you’re really not interested, tell them that your current agency has given you an assignment you’re super excited about and want to see through. Just make sure to thank them and hope to be considered again in the future. And if you have one, make a recommendation of someone they could consider.
Yeah you two bring up a good points. And recommending someone else is good. But this is an employer’s market, and this business will steal your nights and weekends, so I wouldn’t feel bad about “stringing along” a recruiter through a few interviews over the course of a couple weeks. We lose way more time making them money.
