I usually see firms pushing the other way, but maybe the group has approval to add a manager and not a senior? There’s definitely going to be a learning curve. But not impossible.
Agree with EY1 - it seems like they need a manager position filled ASAP for whatever market/office/service line you’re in.
I recently got promoted to senior at my firm and someone from a B4 reached out for an opportunity. He ended up telling me that they’re more likely to consider me for experienced staff (one level below my current). The general exceptions are if you worked at another big4 and/or have certain certifications.
If I were in your position - I’d 100% feel the same. Although the title and higher pay would be nice, I’d feel more comfortable starting at a level below to prepare myself and adjust. I recall seeing a post on the Big4/ accounting subreddit about experienced hires too and people said they usually struggle
