I don't have advice but just wanted to saying that I'm sorry this has happened to you and I hope it all works out!
Aww, thank you, so much. Your kindness is appreciated! I feel like my whole working career has been frought with bad timing! I often wonder how we might have prospered if I had been able to work at the same job for years! But, apparently it wasn’t meant to be!
I wish there was a PSLF specific bowl on fishbowl. If you don’t get solid responses here, I’d suggest you cross post your question to the PSLF forum on Reddit, and/or look through past comments.
You need only work there when you apply, not when it is granted. I would go back to your former employer and see if you can work for a few more weeks while you make your application at a severely reduced rate.
The guidance on the studentaid.gov site says “when you apply and get” forgiveness. Someone posted the screenshot below. Seems like they’re intentionally being shady with the language.
Second the Reddit recommendation. R/PSLF has a ton of information. https://freestudentloanadvice.org/ is a great resource as well.
Church
Community Service Boards, churches, state agencies. Even getting 5 months answering phones for a state or federal government agency would wipe it out.
I was just looking at PSLF today. The 2nd paragraph states it's when you apply and get forgiveness. I would definitely call and verify.
Were the 5 payments already made before you were laid off?
What sort of hours do you need to hold? Maybe sub teaching could work?
Or check out your local YMCA for open positions.
I also appreciate your kind words and support! Best wishes to you!
Technically, you have to be employed full time by a qualifying employer when you apply but you do not have to remain there until you receive forgiveness. I would get those last 5 payments certified and updated now, then technically you only need to work for a qualifying employer for one day to apply for forgiveness.
That being said, MOHELA is a mess and it’s a pain to get forgiveness even when someone clearly meets the requirements so trying to get through on a technicality may prove difficult.
Do you currently have a job? If you don’t want to leave that job, you could certainly try to get a second full time job that qualifies and try to gut it out. You technically only need to work there long enough to fill out the application but id probably work there at least a month so you can get a qualifying payment out of it. That would be hard to deny by MOHELA.
If you don’t have a job, I’d snag a qualifying job and stay until the loans are discharged to avoid any hiccups.
Good luck!
The part where it says “I must be employed full-time by a qualifying employer when I apply for *and get* forgiveness” is what makes me think you need to still be employed at a qualifying employer until you receive it. I’m in a similar boat: I applied, then left my employer. Now, unemployed and looking for another qualifying employer just to make sure Mohela doesn’t try to disqualify me off this technicality.
I wouldn’t leave a qualifying job until I received forgiveness but the requirements were updated. You used to have to be employed by a qualifying employer when you applied and when you received forgiveness. Now you only have to be employed by a qualifying employer when you apply for forgiveness.
Even that seems like nonsense. Should be eligible if you met the requirements regardless of your current status.
