First, need to specify CEO of what...mom and pop shop or publicly traded company? Assuming the latter, my understanding from people that have made CEO who are from consulting background, they are usually brought in at EVP/C-suite with a path to CEO so they can learn the company a little bit before taking over
Sure if you start your own company
Yep- have a few contacts who have made it to C-suite ranks (and i’m talking fortune 100, not just the mid-sized firms) from consulting. More reachable or not- right time, right place and right network.
Very unlikely to land CEO right away. Most companies look for some operational /business experience. You might be able to get in at one level below CEO and work your way up , depending when you exit from consulting.
One of the partners I worked for was brought in as CEO of a VC-funded startup. He was a thought leader in that industry and did Ted talks on it, conferences, etc.
CEO is very rare. A handful of partners leave each year to meaningful CEO roles. Far more to other senior roles (head of marketing, etc).
