Is it a strategic disadvantage to not have an admissions consultant? I just cannot justify the cost of hiring them for my applications.

You'll be fine. Just be very diligent and get regular critical feedback on your narrative.

I will be devils advocate: use them for one or two schools. This gives you a good idea of how to craft your story as well as clean up your resume and identify recommenders. Then you can copy paste for remaining schools

If you were one of your clients, and you had a budget that was far less than the needs of the overall project, how would you utilize a consultant before in housing the remainder of the project that you cannot afford?

It is a strategic disadvantage coz most other people would hire Consultants - and all else being equal, others would always be marginally better coz they have used professionals to do the job. HOWEVER, hiring the wrong consultant can make things worse for you and also cost you money for nothing. So choose wisely...unfortunately, most of these big ticket consultants, run factories and give pathetic service. I do one to one consulting myself , so I could help you while working within your budget.

Really depends on how much help you need. Are you a standout candidate with a memorable story just needing help with finishing touches? Or are you from an over-represented group and really need help finding your story? I was the latter and am 100% certain I wouldn't have gotten into HSW without a consultant.

Definitely have one. It’s worth it

I got one and can’t possibly say it seems worth it yet. Honestly shocked how incredibly hands off they are. Very high level comments

That’s why you should go with a boutique consulting firm. Big ones outsource to others who are part time contractors. I worked with a boutique and I was very happy with mine.
