There is nothing wrong with you being content. It’s not always about a competition :)

We are but the sum of our experiences. One thing I know for sure is that I will NEVER compromise my mental health for a job again. After all, is better to have a job to enjoy than none, or one that sucks the life out of you.
If you are able to meet your financial obligation at your current level, keep this course. What we do for a living is not what defines us, is how we show up to work, the way we treat people, the words we speak that will leave a legacy and resonate with others.
Be happy and keep your mental peace. 🤍
I disagree. One can feel good knowing they played the game, climbed up the ladder then decided to climb back down to smell the roses. So many spend so little time at home or with their families due to work commitments all for more money. What’s the point of having a beautiful home and vacation home and boat if you never get to enjoy them?
I am at peace with stepping down the ladder. The step down afforded me the opportunity for long walks before dark on weekdays, improved health as less hours at the desk, weekly movie night with my peeps, more energy to exercise, and so many more. We choose our addictions. I chose to be addicted to life, fun, and my family…..not more money.
It seems the higher up the ladder you go the more of your personal time you give up.
So true!
Not a problem. One of my best therapy appointments I had centered around this. I had lots of work performance anxiety and she said there is a social expectation to always reach for power or “better” but for me better is being content with my work and having balance. It was a major flip of the switch for me and changed my outlook and how I work.
I have a Bachelor of Business degree with a Marketing major. I have worked as a sales representative with a company car and traveled. I have worked at a bank and opened checking accounts, credit cards, small loans, filed claims and worked online paying bills. I am currently content at working in a non management job; Monday through Friday. Title and 12 hour days with a rotating shift are not worth the money!
Good for you. You do you. You come first. No one will ever put you first. Definitely not in the corporate world. Enjoy your WLB. Options will always be there, if you choose them later in your career.
Nothing wrong with it. But it’s tough when managers want you to move up/do more. Some promotions aren’t worth what they cost and some people just don’t understand that some are content without moving up.
Same! I don’t want to move up at all. If I move up it’s more traveling more work more headaches. I’d rather spend my time with my family and not be stressed out and keep my health. You only get one life. A job if you leave or someone passes away you are replaced. It’s not worth it. I’d rather have a better balance in life and enjoy my time. I’d rather my kids have great memories of a present and happy parent than an always gone stressed out parent.

Not bad at all!! Prioritize peace and enjoyment of your life! Work is necessary to fund your life, but your LIFE is everything else. If you don't have time for a life, what are you working for?
Nope!! I did the same thing recently. While all around me I kept reading about the struggle to get a job and layoffs I quit mine. Good pay $xxx, xxx and benefits and fully remote. But I quit. I felt burn out, imprisoned, and miserable. I couldn’t just keep doing the rinse and repeat.
I do not have a new job lined up. I plan to take a few months off and enjoy life, travel, sleep in, etc.
My experience with Corporate has been to keep taking on more and more, someone leaves, we don’t refill the position but redistribute the work, do more with less, and work more hours. I was a manager then stepped back to a senior contributor. Still too much expectations so I am free now. I will figure it out. Honestly, I’d rather wait tables than keep doing my job.
I’m blessed to be financially secure to have these choices to step away and reevaluate I know.
Good for you! There’s more to life than a job and paying bills!
It is hard when you had a vision of what you wanted your career to be and then you realize it is not worth lowering the quality of your life. Large picture you are just mourning the career you thought you would have and choosing the life you need. I applaud you for being brave enough to quit and find more peace. I am currently almost there but on medical leave from burnout. I cannot imagine going back to my work hell with the worst manager I have ever known. You did what I want to do. Don’t regret choosing yourself over getting a promotion. Also you are probably more sensitive to a promotion because it meant worse work life balance in your last job, so some bit of trauma from your last job is lingering.
That is why i asked not to be promoted and i have fwa
Definitely follow your heart
Things are expensive, but I understand the burn out.. but you always have to strive for greatness.
What is greatness?
I’m curious to know why you think work-life balance is possible?
I’ve thought that way for awhile but as an immigrant I don’t see anyone living that way so I’m beginning to think we’re just trying to force something to happen that won’t happen. I might be wrong but I’m curious.
It’s very possible!
Maybe it isn't normal. Maybe it's is. Can't say. But I too made this resolve a couple weeks ago. I would rather stay where I am in my job than disturb my work-life balance. I have just gotten my first book published though so hopefully that career will take off and help bring in the income I'll be missing out on by not moving up in my company.
If a promotion won’t improve your quality of life, don’t go after it. You are the only person (with family, if relevent) who can say say if the increase in salary/title/prestige will balance the increase in work/hours/stress. Make the choice that works for you now.
