Hello, welcome to the real world. Experienced candidates have been laid off and are desperate to survive!
Yeah I feel bad for the people who are reaching or just meet the minimums. They could be rockstars but when you have 40 resumes, you gotta find ways to make cuts to the pool
People need jobs
That’s for sure.
Please give them a chance! If they are willing to take a paycut that’s their business. Look at the deal you’re getting! I have 14 yrs experience here and a Masters laid off and looking for 7months, it’s rough out here!
I’m more than willing to look at them, but it’s just throwing me off. I’ve hired for several similar roles in the past 2 years and it’s usually 4-9 years of experience is what comes in.
Have you ever seen a job posting with 20+ years required??? That would be ridiculous. 5 is usually posted as meaning “5 or more,” i.e., experienced.
Ive seen 10+ and 15+ for sure. Perhaps not 20 but I’m not looking at like manager or director level roles very often where that is more likely to be expected
It’s very much an employer’s market right now. A ton of mid- and senior-level white collar workers have been let go, since they usually have a bigger impact on payroll.
Plus rampant ageism in tech, which is just brutal.

I have applied to a job I was overqualified for. They required only a high school diploma and 3 years experience. I had 6 years and a masters degree. But I did it because the job paid 30% more than what I was making AND it allowed me to move to another city, which is what I wanted and it was also a small pivot from what I was currently doing. In my head, I’m like, oh I’ll definitely get promoted within like 1-2 years. WRONG! Lol. I applied for an internal position that opened up that I was very well qualified for and it met my career goals. The hiring manager wouldn’t even look at me, wouldn’t even open my application. Yet, he promoted his friend who was fresh out of college with only a year experience. Nepotism at its best. I got another job and quit a little after a year into this job. 50% increase in pay and higher title and much more room for growth.
Moral of the story: over qualified candidates may take the job. But do not expect them to stay long if you try to keep them caged and don’t allow them opportunities for promotion and growth.

I think it’s just the job market right now. Not as many opportunities available and high amount of competition.
nope, job market is tough right now. Also some people may care more about work life balance than $$
