“I know I’ve been on paid leave for 6 months and I’m supposed to be back now but I’d really rather not come in even though everyone else has to, so can I have an exception from the RTO policy? I’m a new parent so I should get special treatment.”
“I know I make enough money for the partners here that it’s worth letting me take a 6 month paid leave and I’d like to keep making tons of money for those partners for as long as possible. Getting to see my kid in the middle of the day for the occasional .1 and turning 2 hours of commute into billable time will make it so I stay here longer, making you more money.”

You should ask. If the influential people in your group have any shred of humanity or compassion, you can get a limited time-bound exemption from the policy.
In the grand scheme of things, even if they say no, missing a bonus is not the end of the world. Your baby will grow up faster than you can believe, and you don’t get a re-do.
There's no harm in asking. I've also seen associates come back at part time and ramp up over a three to six month period (i.e. - come back with a 1800 hours target and ramp back up to 2000 after a specific date).

My friend did this. The firm agreed to two days in office for 6 months.
Depends on the firm and your leverage. When I was at a V50, I was a high biller and was literally told the rule didn’t apply to me. They had a 3 day in office rule and I basically only showed up for events.

What’s the harm in asking? It’s probably a safer bet to ask if you can come in 1-2 days a week instead of 4 rather than a full exemption but I’ve seen firms be flexible with RTO post leave especially in big cities where it’s entirely possible you’ve been on waitlists for childcare before the kid was even born and haven’t been able to secure it yet/ have only been able to secure a part time daycare spot.
I would ask. Depending what state you’re in, you might be able to get an ADA accommodation with the proper paperwork from your doctor. Signed an employment lawyer who has seen everything xo.
