All you need is a pulse to join the military. Add in job security (literally have to break a law to get kicked out) and benefits, especially if you have a family. Then consider things that you can qualify for post-service (VA loan, GI Bill, and plenty of miscellaneous stuff (NY allows property tax deductions for veterans for example) not to mention vets discounts). For that pool of people (and many others still), the pay and benefits are unmatched.

Benefits are nothing to scuff at these days. Thanks so much for your knowledge!
No. Absolutely not.
Until you have BAH, you're making well under minimum wage. Any other answers are likely considering officers (arguably not defined as entry level), or factoring in BAH and other incentives. If you're an E1-E4 on base you likely have to eat at the galley so BAS also does not apply.
Here's an annualized view:

Oh okay!! Thanks for setting the record straight for my understanding.
This is truly laughable. Excluding the BAH and BAS, the military pay is subpar the civilian sector. Part of the reasons why the military can’t retain and recruiting is greatly affected.
The only time it is commendable is when you are on orders and have all those Subsidies.

Thanks for your wisdom!
For an officer, yes. I’m pretty happy when I go on orders pay wise. The BAH and BAS helps too. Don’t receive anything like it at my civilian job

Thanks for your comments! Super informative.
Minimum salary in some states is more than lower enlisted pay.

True story!
If you consider the benefits, tax free allowances, food clothing and shelter covered; yes they pay is a fair wage. You must be proactive in taking advantage of all that is offered in education and training for you and your family. The medical and dental benefits have great value. Run a net tax calculator to do a take home pay comparison. I enlisted as an E-1 and retired as an O-5. Although a fair wage, what you are paid is not comparable to what you and yours place in harms way. The military can be tough on relationships. It is a dangerous occupation as well; however compared to other such noble service careers the compensation and benefits are still at the top of the list.
Since when do they have dental for the family?? When I was in, only I got free dental and I had the option to add a 'rider' for the family for like $500/month or something crazy like that (that's 25% of enlisted pay btw).

This is just salary. The big draw for the military is benefits as a component of total compensation. COBRA healthcare costs like $26k annually and studio housing is $17k annually. Housing and healthcare are free to junior enlisted. Add in the free meals ($5-7k) before you begin to true up against burger flippers whose compensation is nearly entirely salary.
This being said 17-19 year olds can barely do basic arithmetic these days so good luck explaining the true up

There’s also a huge quality variance - like any AFB vs the shitty 70s era barracks in 29 Palms
Not starting, but a fair and above to mid and senior professionals.

Thank you!!
For an 18 year old kid whose alternatives are Walmart or going into debt for college? 100% yes.
College will pay much more in the long term. They have options like UPS driver, oil rigs, solar installing, law enforcement, etc. all occupations that pay much better and don't need a college degree. I think you're referring to 18 yr old BUMS that have no intention of doing anything.
Yes. More fair than a lot of jobs.
But capitalism isn't "fair" and most of us are wage slaves in one form or another.

Totally agree with you!
We really need to differentiate these types of questions as enlisted vs officer. I read a lot of 'what the actual f---?' comments before I realize that anon was an officer. Different lives man.
I was enlisted.
The military pays too much now.
Or rather, it pays too little to some and way too much to a bunch of worthless majors and staff sergeants who are just sticking around to finish out their 20 and then milk the system forever.
lol

Is that a yes? No? 🤷🏻♀️
Who are you Karri and why are you always posting questions here? Just curious
I need that job, I been doing for free for too long
I definitely think it’s fair. What other organization will let someone join straight out of high school (or even those HS drop outs) with zero skills, provide all necessary training, AND you get full benefits throughout your training.
