Is LinkedIn helpful? I only see it as a means to showcase one's experience/education background. Am I missing out on its benefits? Not a lot of big agencies post jobs there (atleast in my city) and the recruiters that do reach out have vague, often marketing-related, job offers.

I think it’s weird when someone doesn’t have a profile

Tbh, it’s definitely helped me land my last 3 jobs

Yes absolutely. And honestly, it won't hurt you to have a profile up. Nowadays opportunities are found through networking and online connections. It's your prerogative to have those discovery conversations and explore if the opportunities are worth it. No worthwhile job is going to just simply fall into your lap. If you're looking for a particular opportunity, make your resume clear to represent that. You can write a quick summary of what you're looking for as well.

the agencies’ recruiters are active on linkedin, regardless of whether the agency is.

I got my last 3 jobs via LinkedIn recruitment

My CV was pulled from my Linkedin and I now have my job because of it. The last two jobs I got because a rec saw my LinkedIn. The best part of LinkedIn is it's an always current CV.

One of my most lucrative freelance clients happened because they found me on LinkedIn. Definitely worth it! Do some reading on how to optimize your page, too. That will help. Hubspot has a lot of great info.

Our recruiters troll it constantly when we have openings. So yes, worth it. Personally I only use as a virtual directory and it’s helpful to see where past colleagues are now if you ever need inside connection etc.

“Big agencies “ don’t post jobs but smaller ones do and that’s also where bigger agency recruiters find talent also. As a jr you won’t see much coming from LinkedIn but as you get experience and bigger brands on your resume, you’ll probably see more value in it. I’ve gotten half my jobs from LinkedIn from recruiters reaching out and from people in my network tagging me on jobs. I wouldn’t give up on it so soon, you’re just starting out. You’ll need all points of connection in this industry. Opportunities can be difficult to find at any level and you’ll need all the help you can get. Keep on it, keep it up to date, add A LOT of creative services people. Good luck!

Yes absolutely. The legitimacy of the recruiter outreach improves as you get more experienced. There’s still spam, but more of it is real job opportunities.

In the old days you had a Portfolio and resume. Now you have a Portfolio and a LinkedIn profile. When you do change jobs it’s a simple way for employers to find out who you are and ensure that you didn’t just appear out of nowhere with no work history.

Hey, OP. If you're new to the job market, many agencies pulled jobs down from LinkedIn and their own career sites due to Covid and layoffs. Now that budgets may be a little more firm for the rest of 2020, you're likely to see more posts. I don't know a recruiter that doesn't use LinkedIn to help source talent, so you should definitely have a profile that shares your portfolio link.

A former colleague reached out to me via LinkedIn and I got my current job. Applying for posted jobs probably has a low success rate.

No doubt. LinkedIn (users) has (post) a lot of bogus fluff but the base usage is definitely utilized and important.

Do it, it’s the number one place people go to find your portfolio site link

Deloitte moms, I need your guidance. For some reason, someone (not sure which team) has marked my maternity leave (LOA) starting next week on DTE and I can’t update it to show PTO. Incoming 1st yr BigLaw associate (V50 in a big city). I am curious if there are networking benefits to having expensive work clothes/accessories. I went to school on scholarship so I don’t have tons of debt, but my parents aren’t rich so much of the culture is foreign to me. I have hobbies I would rather spend my discretionary income on. But if having a Rolex or wearing Brooks Brothers suits would improve my standing w partners or if dressing cheaper would hurt, then I’d suck it up. Pls advise

I spent the last 3 months "growing up" & now I'm ready to go. 1st thing is for me to get my own place. I'd like to buy instead of rent because I don't want to pay someone else's mortgage. I'm thinking of selling my car & cash out some of my 401k to buy a house. My thought is to put down 3.5% for a FHA loan then make a big payment towards the principal to reduce long-term interest. Anything wrong with this thinking or anything else I should consider?

How are you guys preparing for next year? I'm thinking of of using Facebook ads to generate seminar invites in hopes of replacing mailing. Doesn't cost much to try and see if I get any benefits

Also, since I don’t want to put alot of my savings in a IRA or Roth CONT.

I tried to hold firm and make sure they said ballpark range first before I said if those align with my expectations, but she gave a vague “it depends on market, but I can give you a broad range from $45k-$90k for the role.” So I responded with $70k-$80k.
