Blackline is just boomerspeak for redline
haha love this. I use redline as that's the actual word Litera Compare uses
Comparison programs just make redlines these days. If someone asks for a blackline, they are referring to printing out the redline and scanning it in black and white. Believe it or not, some older lawyers are just used to reviewing things that way.

The age of the person asking for one.
No difference that I’ve ever heard of—just folks calling the same thing different names. Curious to see if anyone has different info. (3rd year, corporate)
Redline=US, Blackline= Canada/UK
Before computer software was created to compare documents, junior associates (like me) would mark documents using a red pen to make changes, with carrot for deletion and underlining additions. Because the text was black, we used red ink to make it easier to red, hence redline. Now that computer software can compare documents and the print-out may be entirely black ink - voila- blackline.
The age of the person. In the past, users used black felt pen to indicate changes. Also, older computer systems could not indicate color changes or the other side may not have had a color printer, so older people use the term “black line.” “Red lines” refers to how track changes shows changes. So most young people use that term.
Don’t forget “delta view” or “DV”
Yep. Now it’s Litera Compare lol
I’ve just assumed that redline = Word track changes , while black line = pdf version of Compare. 🤷♂️
This is not a generational terminology. Track changes are redlines. They show a document in progress with mark-ups/comments. Blacklines show the difference between a final doc and the original. Partners have their own preferences. They’re not interchangeable.
There is a concrete, technical difference between redlining that includes track changes, and blacklining that is comparing two documents. Technically, Litera is blacklining 😉
A good explanation about the variants is here: https://treediff.com/faq/blacklining-or-redlining
