Be proactive in your communication up front and provide a timeframe when they can expect a response, and that you will let them know if they got it or not.
When candidates have to follow up it’s generally because the process is taking too long and/or there’s poor communication on your end.
If you build trust with the candidate by setting expectations and communicating regularly, it will save you from being ‘contacted daily’ in the long run. Basic respect and common courtesy go a long way in our business.

TA1, really? You bring up a ridiculous straw man of me calling applicants "rubbish"? Is that what I said? No, it is not.
I am specifically talking about people who "check in" EVERY DAY, people who apply and then immediately call to see if I "got their application" as though, as a generalist, I check the applications every fifteen minutes, and as though I'm going to remember the name of all the applicants so I could say yes, it came in.
I fully understand how difficult the job market is right now, and I'm enormously sympathetic. I also know that many companies suck at communicating with candidates who have gone through the interview process. The fact remains that they're not helping themselves get jobs by haranguing TA or HR. We have literally zero control over whether the hiring managers look at the candidates we present when we present them. How many times have your hiring managers said stupid stuff like "I don't have time to interview right now"? In my career, it has happened nearly every time I've been directly involved in recruiting, and it left me holding the bag with the applicants. You have never had to nudge hiring managers to interview applicants and make a decision? You've never had hiring managers who, after seeing someone they felt was "perfect" for the job, say "I just want to meet a couple more to compare"? If not, you've been extraordinarily lucky.
How, exactly, do you think applicants calling EVERY DAY helps their chances at getting the job? Or calling half an hour after submitting an application? It's difficult enough dealing with hiring managers who don't prioritize filling their vacancies, and then we have to put up with candidates who call every day.
By the way, my retirement is set for the end of 2027. I've been doing this for way longer than you have, and so I've experienced these candidates far more than you have, as well as hiring managers who put us into the position of having to deal with these candidates without even knowing what the hiring manager wants to do.
What about the ones who call directly after applying asking for an update. Those are the ones that really get me.
Even if feel the same
Just don’t respond 🤷🏽♂️
My go to email to an overly eager candidate:
"Hi [Name],
First, I want to say I appreciate your tenacity and we're thrilled that you're so passionate about the possibility of joining [Company]! That said, I am one person working 20+ openings with dozens of candidates each and I simply can't provide constant updates. I promise that as soon as I know what next steps looks like, I will reach out to you!
Thank you in advance for your understanding."

I think honesty works best. I would kindly set expectations early rather than let frustration build. Daily follow ups would wear me down too.
