You could not pay me any amount of money to book through travel portals anymore. Only takes one ruined trip where they forget to pay the hotel or won't refund you for months because the refund goes to some internal card to teach you that
Pro
If you want ultimate flexibility/unsure of the travel plans, best to book with carrier. If you want to maximize points + willing to work a little off-book if something goes wrong, do portal.
Another consideration-check the prices on both as they’re often not the same. Might help make the decision easy if that’s the case
There’s a couple of benefits to booking through the portal:
1. Extra points on flights booked and paid for through the portal, so it’s kind of like a double whammy if you’re getting 5x points on flights instead of the usual 3x (10x on hotels and car rentals too, as well as chase dining)
2. You get chase travel protections on any flights booked with a CSR card but if you book it through the portal you get access to Chase Travel’s helpline for all of it, from my experience they’re very good (international Chase Travel is a bit harder to jump through hoops with but it’s still good)
3. Only other outside tip is to look at other booking services if you’re booking an experience, when I was in France I used chase to book a bunch of experiences and it cancelled on me leaving me to scramble and remake the plans with other groups, but domestically Chase Travel has been incredible.

Always book direct. You are the last priority in IRROPS if you book using a third party and good luck getting ahold of the third party service reps.

Booking through a travel portal is a total gamble. If all goes well, great. If there are any issues with the flight, the carrier puts you last on their priority list and you'll have to deal with Chase in trying to get it fixed. Based on many stories, it sucks.
Personally I only book directly.
I have Capitol One but typically will book through portal for short and very familiar domestic destinations like I could drive if all else failed for sure never international.
I will often pay the 20/30 extra for booking to be 100% cancelable as well; 80% covered by Capitol one standard
It ultimately depends on if the ticket you end up buying is cancellable. Believe United waived change fees too
If you have status, I’d urge booking direct since the airline can easily fix your flight that way. If you don’t have status, it more of a toss up since you might be able to reach the OTA customer support faster than you can reach someone from the airline. Also note that some OTA don’t have access to all the fares you’d find booking direct.
