Yes! A lot of opportunities out there! It is just a matter of applying and never giving up.
Thank you - means a lot
Of course. However, we can't deny that referrals have an advantage. You can try posting in the referrals bowl. Good luck, OP!
Age? Studies? Not sure what you're getting at since most people don't have either when getting into a good firm straight out of school. (I hired multiple students this year who are first gen college students and some who are first gen Americans).
Most people do internships to get experience. I did many, and worked during the school year, and got into corporate with zero referrals or network.
I’m 23. I work in healthcare. And, I am beginning my Master’s degree in Data Science. Yeah, I am first gen American. I did an internship when I was 20 for a very small accounting firm. Everything else was healthcare based for survival.
You’d have to get your foot in the door first of all. You can directly apply on the career website but getting to know people who work there helps u understand what they’re looking for
How? I message people on LinkedIn, and I am not worth their while in their eyes due to not having enough experience. How do I get a network to land an internship?
Do you at least have any experience under your belt? Apply for internships first. As soon as the internship begins, sit down with your supervisor and discuss your objectives in detail. Start itoff with "My objective is to perform at such a high standard that I get an offer for a full-time job."
Right, but how to obtain the internship?
I mean it's tougher for sure but not impossible. I haven't done it personally but there's a couple of things to do:
Set your open to work stuff to the new city on LinkedIn so you start showing up on recruiter's searches there. Check the companies you're interested in for people that have mutual connections with your current network. Good luck!
If you can network with people at a company that has a presence in your city of choice, that may also help. Ask for a referral or maybe get a job there and try to transfer to your city after a year or two? It definitely sucks not being able to use your network after a certain point though.
Of course you can. Although you have to prepare yourself for rejections because some companies require a college degree. Which company are you trying to apply to?
I am studying a master’s degree in data science. I don’t have the experience bc I’m still a student trying to break in, but how does one do it?
Yes. But to be honest, your chances of getting hired are low. Maybe getting a certification will help.
I am a data science Master’s student
I have been working in a field that isn’t very relevant to business; it’s in healthcare, so I never meet the ATS standards in terms of resume - I don’t know where to network - I checked Facebook events and googled some events, but they all look like small business owner meet ups. I am currently a data science Master’s student at a uni located in Chicago, taking remote classes.
I am first gen American, and every opportunity I have obtained I have earned. I just find it really difficult to break into a reputable or brand name corporate environment. It’s like a dream for me, but I will keep trying
Thank you all for helping - please help me further and help a soul out
