Book less hours. Problem solved. You should be talking to the teams that you are on and seeing if there’s a way for you to delegate work to others.
Don’t kill yourself early on in your career. That’s my recommendation for you. You can burn out and if you create expectations which are too high, then you’ll always be compared to that so if you have a bad quarter you’ll look bad.
Delegate tasks. If you are someone that consistently find yourself saying “it will be faster if I do it” or “this won’t be right unless I do it” then ask for coaching on how to delegate and how to provide feedback to lower levels.

That’s why this business model doesn’t work, if people actually think about it. The only real solution is to start being bad at your job, but your firm will notice. That’s why you have a personal incentive to be mediocre or middle of the road in terms of utilization so you blend in, instead of standing out because you just get more work with minimal compensation.
Oh gosh, I wish that I could be able to think of this when I was tax associate. I was on the same situation as OP, eventually I was burnt out.

Maybe have a conversation with your coach or partner. Folks contort themselves into knots to find a solution that is anything except communicating.
Smashing your utilization goals is the easiest way to get on the promo and big bonus list.

Guess I’m at the wrong firm for bonuses!
Work less. You can already see that you only need to aim for 95% utilization to be at the top of the list. No reason to work late besides pleasing people that don't have your best interests in mind. If they ask why you're only working 8 or 9 hours a day, point to your overutilization and go offline.

With all due respect (which actually is very little), this is the exact macho, asinine bravado BS that perpetuates the overwork problem. Good work carrying the banner of your masters.
This is literally what you sound like:
Who cares what others are doing, real burnout can seriously handicap you, don't go there.

Are you 100% sure your peers are not in the same position? Our senior ranges are 85-95 but everyone is significantly above that when looking at adjusted utilization.

That’s interesting that they would post peer averages. Kpmg only provides the targets for each level. One thing to consider is it is unfortunate but someone has to do off cycle YE clients and there are not enough of them to keep all staff busy and you can’t have 30 staff each working 5 hours a week on a client. So some people have to have do those and normally have 12/31 clients since the firm is generally short staff during that time. That creates a situation where you would be above your peers. Generally those are the higher performing staff and should usually result in higher raises and VC. But if your scheduled while some of your peers are unassigned I wouldn’t think you can go to management and say you don’t want to do it because some of my co workers are unassigned.
you need to talk to experience management ... tell then your schedule is full ... ?
