How I interpret comments like that would depend on the context. If someone is just making small talk and mentions they're really busy, that's pretty standard and no big deal. But if it's something where someone is constantly complaining about how busy they are, that would get annoying and might indicate there's a problem. To be honest, I think some people talk themselves into believing things are more difficult than they really are. Just do it, you don't need to talk about it.
This, a lot of what I assume you're saying and is very common is the complain to procrastinate. I've noticed myself doing this at times earlier in my career but you'll complain and sit and mop for 10 minutes here, 45 minutes there, another 20 minutes here and it's just a cycle of never doing it and it stockpiling

I would trust that coworker way more because they are honest. Everyone else is just hiding it.
I agree with above about context. But also a lot of leaders say - let us know if you need help and if you’re getting burnt out, so if you say that and then someone says they need help/support, you shouldn’t judge them for it.

Chill out, we're just auditors, not saving lives. Anyone claiming they're not affected mentally or emotionally by busy season is simply not being honest or transparent.
Nothing wrong with people admitting things are bad, and I would never take it as being weakness or incompetence. Things suck right now for a lot of people, and the only time I’ve hidden it is on a couple calls with leadership.
I think there are a lot of factors in play. What I've seen is that public accounting isn't at its worst because of the work - if there are other toxic elements in play (boss with an unpleasant attitude or personality), then that's a problem.
I think the people you work with know if you’re overwhelmed. At least with one of my teams. From partner down, they know when I’m stretched thin. On one of my teams, the partner has asked how he can help & he does. I know that’s rare so it’s nice when it happens.
Everyone gets overwhelmed from time to time.
But yes, ultimately, if you consistently feel like every day is out of control and you can't find solutions, you have a problem. Might be you, might be the firm, might be both.
