I’ve applied to ~15 Chief of Staff or Strategic Ops roles at Series B+ and enterprise companies that match my experience line-for-line. But aside from a couple auto rejections, it’s been crickets. Are roles like this actually filled through open applications, or are they almost always backchannel? If you’ve landed a CoS role in tech, I’d really appreciate any insight on what actually cuts through. Thanks!

I mean...being a Chief of Staff requires a lot of chemistry with the executive. So, yes, it's a lot of back channel. Get networking!

And...it takes a while to get the Chief of Staff title, but you will do the job for a while before...Very normal!

The hardest thing to do as a CoS is get the title. I was hand-picked from LinkedIn based on my career path. I had the right journey and the title when I was recruited. Find a way to get the title.

I've been trying but no CoS in sight due to internal politics. The closest I've been able to get my CEO to agree to is Strategic Operations. Hopefully that gets me a little closer externally.

You gotta network...that's how it works now, but especially for a Chief of Staff. This role is VERY intimate...you will know things about your exec that their spouses won't know (how do they like their documents set up? how do they really feel about their peers?)

Get out there!

I have been approached with an opportunity at JP Morgan Chase for their private client advisor role. The book is about 30M all in. I am currently an experienced hybrid asset manager wholesaler and have experience in advising as well. Curious about the opportunity with JPM and if it’s worth it. I currently make about 160k and if JPM would give me a high draw for the first 3 years to build, and if it’s feasible to sustain that 160+ there.

I am starting a 4-months internship at a company B in January. However, I just heard from a company T that they will interview me for their full time position.

Company T is paying me way more (twice) than Company B. And I like company T more. However, they want me to start working in February if I get this position. If I end up getting the offer, I will have to quit my internship at Company B, almost immediately after I begin the internship.

Is this okay?

I’m interviewing for an EA (not your typical role) to a serial entrepreneur/CEO who is also interviewing for a Chief of Staff. They have mentioned I would make a great CoS based on my prev experience & could see me being a COO in the next 10 yrs. After playing back our last meet, I realise the CEO was trying to tease out of me/get me to probe on interest for CoS role. I am interested but also don’t want to talk myself out of the EA role as I really want to work for this individual – advice pls?

Hi! I’m currently CoS to the CEO for a PE backed healthcare company. I currently make $140K + $25K bonus. I was CoS for 1.5 year at a nonprofit before joining this company, and have been at my current company for 1.5 years for a total of 3 years of CoS experience. I’m up for a raise this month, and curious what some of you are making for ballpark? I’m also on a COO path at my current company and was wondering if anyone else is also on that trajectory and if you have any tips? Thanks!
