Hi! Currently a CoS at a Series A tech start up. Happy to connect more if you have specific questions. I began with the company in a customer success role with 3 prior years of operations experience. I’ve spoken with many other people in the CoS role in various size companies. If you are looking to be a CoS helping to grow and scale a company, starting in a different role and building relationships is a great place to start. A lot of people have then pitched the role to their principal. Alternatively, business operations and relevant industry experience is what I would recommend gaining to succeed in the role.
I was recently promoted to the role. I have been at the company for 2 yrs, 3mos. Started as a sr operations analyst that sat on the FP&A team under fin-ops. I stayed in that role for 1.5 yrs & worked on a variety of complex, high-visability projects before being promoted to the strategy team. I was a manager on the strategy team for 8 mos & had a lot of success leading several broad-spectrum, high priority initiatives. The CEO recently promoted the previous chief of staff. I was invited to fill the CoS role. I'm very new in the position, but enjoying the challenge. I have a bachelor's degree in economics and my masters degree is totally unrelated to the business world 😅. Here's a great article about CoS role by George Bradt - https://primechiefofstaff.com/framing-your-chief-of-staff-role-for-better-performance/
