It’s possible, but whether you’d be able to step into a non-entry level developer role with just the academic experience may be challenging.
I’m not saying it’s impossible, but you may need something more tangible like a GitHub account demonstrating personal projects etc.
Just out of curiosity, what pay range would you be stepping down from? Some junior devs make 6 figures, it just depends on the firm and particular skillset
You could learn about Product Management and shift into a TPM role (technical product manager) where you need to do scripting: 140-180k
and if you learn DevOps or cloud architecture you could earn good 6 figures, mid to upper 100s into the 200s with some experience. Learn AWS step functions and Lamba, big bucks waiting in the wings - infrastructure as code is hot and poised to increase in demand, start now and be competitive in 1-2 years when more roles open up needing these skills.
Candidly you don't have professional development experience so you are junior level, there's no getting around that. Junior dev roles are super competitive and your experience will give you an edge. You should be happy of that, as many people are entirely unable to break in. You can probably break 6 figures if you go somewhere like SF or NYC
Find to do what you love! I think you are very qualified to do anything you want! Congratulations on your recent achievement! 👌🏼✨
Be happy about your achievements! Enjoy the goals… live life. It’s short. I can tell tell much more…
At this juncture, reboot your career to AI developer. I think then you’d get great chops then as an AI developer and an agile coach. You could parlay that after a few years and prolly get more money.
Take the pay hit now, you seem young enough to recover from it. Swallow the pride, if you don’t have dev experience you’re a junior.
And tbh, it’s prolly more fun to just show and code versus the crap responsibility you had from an agile coach.
Fair enough. Just never heard that before
AI may be the way to go, Python is very yesterday for legacy systems (COBOL and Fortran anyone?) JavaScript is a good skill but so are your people skills.
I program COBOL and FORTRAN while I also using GenAI to make chatbots and more.
Depends on where you are working. If you are interested about pay for software engineers I would try to find places that are known for giving out RSUs. My colleagues and I have reflected on how a large amount of RSUs in good ways allowing for houses, paying for kid’s tuition, early retirement, and more.
Could you share your career track to becoming an SM/Agile coach? I'm doing my CSM soon and looking to branch out into the product side of things but I come from a non tech background, so hearing your career progression would help me get an idea.
Where I'm leaving. They are eliminating PMs and focusing on scrum (SAFe) but going g to overwork the SM with too many teams to a point they'll fail
I’m sure there’s been cases but you’ll have to spend 6-8 months learning a language or area and THEN outshining those that have 5-7 YOE for a position. It’s a matter of how badly you want it.
Definitely try for a developer job tailor a version of your resume to show how you also did some development as a Scrum Master.
If you get a Scrum Master position again start getting hands on coding, you maybe able to transfer within the company. I've seen it done from Scrum Master to Product Owner
