I’ve been at a big law firm for over 1.5 years now, but I despise working with the partners I work with. I recently got an offer to go in-house at a SaaS company and got good vibes from the GC. I’m just worried their legal team and processes are not built out (if I join, it’d be a team of 3), but it seems the GC has a history of building legal teams in house (the GC joined about a year ago). What are the odds I could go back to big law if I hated the in-house role? Anyone regret going in house?

It sounds like you prefer the structure of biglaw that doesn't exist in house. I've seen people go back to firms, but it's rare because nobody really regrets it.

Are you saying going in house and then back to big law is rare? I don’t think so I know a number of people who did that. I feel like your firm will usually take you back if it’s quick, but I’m not sure that would be true with someone so junior and/or in this environment

Is the lack of built out processes worse than the partners you work with?

I’m sure others have considered this, I really feel burned out on my specific subspecialty. For the most part I do interventional pain management. My dilemma… I am an injury adjuster at a carrier experiencing high inventory that’s barely manageable. A competitor offered a higher salary and manageable workload. BUT, I would like to get into underwriting. I applied for UW position w/ a different carrier and they’ve made an offer. It’s lower than my current salary and significantly lower than what I’d make by taking the first offer. Do I take the high salary and stay in claims or go for UW in hopes it will be best in long run?

I’m a non-TX immigration attorney mentoring a UT student who went to my undergrad. He’s done incredibly well in OCI and pre-OCI. Thus far, he’s landed interviews with (all in Houston): Baker Botts, Sidley Austin, Kirkland, Winston Strawn, Reed Smith, Norton Rose, and Locke Lord. Also Perkins Coie in Dallas. He’s leaning transactional, but also open to litigation. Any insights/advice on these firms in the TX market? Any to avoid?

What do you do when you feel the goalpost has been/is being moved re: billable requirements? Like there's a spoken vs unspoken? I chose this job based on billables vs salary and what I'm being told I'm expected to do now is 20-30% (at least) > than what was initially agreed upon. Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. I'm grateful to have lots of good work but not sure how to course correct.

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!
