I mean this kindly but this is an incredibly naive take.
We are all dispensable and one spreadsheet line item away from being RIFed. Everyone should be on guard because it all comes down to money.
It’s not a take, I was just sharing what’s been happening in my office. I didn’t say producers were immune that would be ridiculous. Everyone is wary, obviously.
Are you giving people solutions? Not sure how it benefits you if you feel your role has been stable. Data can be given from ChatGPT.
If you haven’t been laid off in the last few years or tried to find a new job, you would have no idea. I have over 20 years of experience as a graphic designer in publishing, advertising, higher ed, and tech, and I was laid off from my tech job in early 2024. I could NOT find another design job; job hunting was previously always easy/quick/seamless for me in the past. I had to take a job doing menial office work for half the pay of my tech job just to pay my mortgage and keep my kids fed. Over a year later and finally back in a design job. The market is actually scary bad right now in a way I have never seen before.

I suspect the problem may have to do with the initials A and I
No @Senior Copywriter 1 it has to do more with
G-R-E-E-D! Publicis listed record profits and still has laid off over 400 people in the last year.

Ask this again in two months.
I’d say it’s very bad and it’s not exclusively due to AI. I read a lot and follow the market too. If you’re super busy at work I suggest signing up for the free newsletters. Even if you scan them quickly but get enough it’s good enough to give you a pretty solid idea of how people are feeling. The Reddit threads seem to be super candid too. At the shop I’m at, they’re pushing work in-house, like so many others. Half the fun used to be to travel for shoots, but more and more that clients want to recycle old footage. Even for editorial work it’s almost impossible now to take it outside, (to a vendor). VSFX people seem impacted largely due to AI, but copywriters too. I’ve heard people say it’s worse than 2008. On top of everything am scandalized by food prices!
The measure is about 13k with Publicis, IPG, Omnicom, and Dentsu all doing layoffs.
Employment levels are about where they were in 2019. So it’s not that the industry has collapsed, we’ve just shed the jobs added during a historically of historically low interest rates.
But industry contractions are brutal to live through, even if many people remain employed in relatively good jobs (just ask Detroit autoworkers). Not everyone let go will find equivalent jobs and the people that remain will be left in a leaner, less secure position.
Adding onto that the people let go are almost always in the toughest position to find new jobs. It’s seniors with big salaries, juniors who might not have a good book and lots of people doing the important, but less visible work that goes into keeping any account running.
