I’ve had interviews where recruiters still asked what I currently make, even though it’s not supposed to factor in. I usually redirect, but it’s tricky. How do you handle that question when it comes up?

I’d just reply with the target base and variable comp that I’d be comfortable with

I am currently being paid $37/hr

Respond with what you’re aiming for or targeting instead.

Will do next time! Very smart

I’ve been only asked once in my career. A hiring manager asked me and I didn’t hesitate to answer not knowing it was a negative thing smh. And I shouldn’t have answered. But I’ve seen people say to redirect the question. Also you should already have an idea of what you want to make or the typical salary for the role. so you can say something along the lines of I’m looking for a salary range between $80k-90k what the salary budget for this role? This could possibly trick them into thinking that you currently make that much.

like

Thank you!! Appreciate this perspective

The salary range should be presented as part of the initial discussion. That would also include people who are currently unemployed. I was recently contacted about a position and the recruiter gave me the salary range.

like

Agreed, I will try to keep the script focused on that rather than what I currently make

You also wanna make sure that you’re talking about targeted salary range or total salary range because there’s a difference. The salary range can also be referred to as base salary.

like

Great point! Thank you.

Instead of saying “I am targeting XYZ” say “I am currently interviewing for roles offering between XYZ”. It shows you are being considered at the range elsewhere rather than “this number is what I’m hoping to get” as a sort of lofted goal.
A good recruiter will tell you the range in full transparency. Ones that play games are usually the ones ghosting you

If you can't talk openly about comp, how should I expect you to tackle negotiations once you're in house?

Asking current comp is one way to start the discussion. As a hiring manager, I don't need to know your comp, but I do need to know your expectations and if they are reasonable (i.e. you know the role).

This should be a 2-way conversation, and I expect the candidates to push me certain elements of comp (trajectory, bonus ranges, fringe benefits, etc.).

like

Lie. Lol. Tell them what you actually want to make.

I just flat out say “ in my state that considered an illegal question. However, I am happy to provide the compensation I am seeking after I learn more about the role”

Question about remote job negotiations

I'm currently interviewing for a remote role for a company based in NY.

The thing is I'm based in a different city (southern U.S.)

My question is:

When it comes time to talk compensation, should I base the market rate for the role on my city of residence or NY?

Would it make sense to ask them directly how they determine comp for NY-bases vs. other city-based employees?

Anyone have experience with this?

My questions are is it typical to have 1 person doing both the billing and denials within a new vertical for all ins.? Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!
