I've noticed my team does the bare minimum. They can't "run" with project independently and need constant reminders to keep them on track with projects. How can I improve this without constantly coming across as negative? I am spread thin already, so the tactic of combing good and bad feedback doesn't seem to be working.

Keep a running, shared document with timelines, milestones and deliverables. Have everyone agree to the dates in writing. Have weekly sync meetings to make sure everyone is on track to meet the agreed upon deadlines. Frame it as a way to help keep yourself and the team organized and clear, and improve communication.

This also helps build a case if you ever need to roll someone off or put them on a PIP. But for the ones who just need a nudge to right the ship, this is a handy tool.

Don’t sandwich feedback. Clearly outline expectations. Let them know when expectations are not met.

My expectation for this project/for people in this role is that you do x, y, z independently, consult me for feedback when it is 80% complete, and incorporate feedback independently. For this project the delivery date is X.

This is not meeting expectations in the following ways. Talk me through where you struggled. On your second pass, what will you do differently?

Sounds like you need to establish more candid relationships with your team members. Sandwiching your requests and constructive feedback in between positive feedback never works. And it sounds like they aren’t taking accountability and instead, rely on you to push them. You need to change the dynamic. Lay out what you expect, tell them you you trust them to get the job done and make them accountable for hitting their milestones and reporting back to you. Some may thrive, others may not.

I find myself questioning basic politeness I’ve learned since a child. Wondering what everyone else thinks. I work with an associate. She’s great. When she does good work or something I’ve asked her to do, I, of course, say “thank you!” I don’t really expect a response. She always replies “you’re welcome!” Or some variation. And for some reason, that’s awkward. Is it just me? I know in normal manners, that is the right response. Why does it sit funny?

I was on a tour but where I asked a couple of older women sitting behind me to speak softly as it was 6:30 am in the morning. After that they kept saying loudly that i’m smelling and that i need to use deo and that i should keep my arm down. I confronted them later and they said respect your elders?? Witnessed ageism in a unusual way. I am a P, Male, 51
Client counterpart and I were discussing a Consultant and the client told me he didn’t want this guy because the consultant is in his 50s. I quietly told the client that cannot be a reason plus I am in my 50s and you should have seen the client back paddle with compliments for me. Just a weird situation. Ageism is real.

One of my friend was asked to resign because she got pregnant . Really looking for a way to turn around a toxic building culture with staff to staff bullying, cliques/social isolation, hard feelings on big topics (racism, non acceptance of gender identity). Last year the staff polarized with the lead bully whom I helped leave. And the lead gossip (who was my secretary) that gained their sympathy and turned them against me. She also left.
