It is the hunger games. Also there are a metric ton of tangentially related creative types that shoot their shot on LinkedIn despite being wildly unqualified.

I was morbidly curious so I took a look at a few of the portfolios. Woof. A few good ones but yeah, mostly amateur hour.
Yeah, you’re right, it is Hunger Games out there.
I was applying to every single post like this I could find in 2024. It was a sparse year for work and I barely squeaked through, and 2025 is already shaping up to be much better.
None of these posts directly led to any kind of gig, short term or otherwise. The contracts and gigs I have now happened solely because I knew someone who had a need for a contractor with my skills.
HOWEVER, a number of those gigs happened because the right person saw in their feed that I kept commenting on these posts. They knew I was available and I popped to mind the second they knew there was a need somewhere they could recommend me.
So yes, it’s Hunger Games when competing for the specific job the post is about. But there are secondary benefits to being active on LI and chasing down leads.

People wanna skip the old way of knowing people… working with them
Gotta get a job first. On LinkedIn.
It’s such a scummy process and I hate when creatives do it.
What's the reason with the landscape today compared to 2020-2022?

That was a period of overspending, and we are now in a period of underspending.
Eventually the hope is we just get back to normalcy.
A lot of factors in play: economy isn’t as good as it’s appeared (propped up by record govt spending), inflation, interest rates, cautious brands.
