Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I always ask up front. I don't want my time wasted, nor do I want to waste anyone else's. I can't think of any argument against having this conversation up front.

What do you say or how do you approach it?
I waited it out, but when they sent me an offer, I countered. Always counter! They gave me another 6.4%.
Can you share how you navigated the counter?
You know if you can’t afford your student loans, you can switch to income based repayment?
Up front. It would have saved me a lot of time.
If they’re not straightforward with salary expectations, then it’s a hard pass for me. If they’re playing these games during the recruiting and interviewing process then it’s not going to be any better once you’re onboarded. They’ll most likely undercut you when raise and bonus season comes around!
