What is easier to break into, data science or data engineering?

In my current role I have opportunities to upskill in either, but it seems like DS might be oversaturated, and hard to get into without a formal education in it. My current tech stack is python/sql/viz tools, and entry level floyd certs for GCP and AWS.

Counter:
93500/yr salary w/ 10k sign-on

Response:
84800/yr with 10k sign-on

My go/no go mental number:
88500/yr with 7.5k signon

Based on my conversation with HR, I've maxed out the base pay number. Does it sound reasonable to come back with 84800/yr with 12.5k sign-on since they weren't close to the base pay number I was looking for?

Offer from other product base company- 32 lpa(29 fixed+ 3 variable).

I had discussion with HR, they said they can max go for approx 34.5 lpa ( 26 fixed + 4.9 variable+ 3.6 stocks for 4 years).

Considering a transition to data analytics/data analyst/IT type roles. Anyone make the switch from accounting without extensive prior knowledge in these areas? Currently enrolling in EdX courses to confirm interest and get a baseline level of skill. Also trying to consider whether it’ll mean a significant pay cut or not.
