Just got fired for not performing up to standard because my mother is dying and firstly I was told to take time off as compassionate leave. Feeling guilty, I did return to work though probably not in a fit state but I thought I'd be praised for making the effort, sadly no. I was fired. So upset as I was doing my best and training wasn't as thorough as I had hoped.

Sounds like the company handled this with all the empathy of a brick wall. Firing someone navigating a family crisis instead of offering support says more about their leadership than your performance 🎭

It seems like the company did try to help by offering leave. OP returned on their own and didn’t perform. This one seems simple to me. When you are offered leave, and refuse, the results are on you. No one gets praise for underperforming when they’re given the option to take time off.

I am really sorry! Please focus on your mother and your mental health.. Those should be your priorities now..Many companies do not have any empathy and only care about profits and results You at least got to know, the kind of people/ company you were dealing with. I hope you find something better when you are ready 🙏

Prior to your moms death tho. How was your performance and be honest chances are youll never see us so be honet with yourself and with us

Sounds like OP is fairly new to either the company or the position if they are referencing lack of training.

I'm so sorry. A similar thing happened to me.

I’m looking for a new job, working remotely, that doesn’t require a Bachelor’s. (I’m currently going back to school to get one, as I only have an Associate’s in Mathematics right now)
I had positions in private sector that allowed me to supplement having a degree with experience but not in public sector. I’ve seen coworkers get positions they aren’t able to do simply because they have a degree and then leave a mess for me to clean up but I’m not allowed to have the position. Any suggestions?

Are private companies easier to work at than public companies in accounting? We have such an accelerated close deadline at the publicly traded company I’m at now, I really hate the inflexible tight deadlines and analysis seems to drag on forever after that. We also close AP/AR very early in the month yet that doesn’t stop payments/receipts from happening so we’re constantly adjusting our accruals until the end of month. Do private companies start their close after the month actually ends?
