Just wanted to share my recent experience guiding my brother in his salary negotiation from what I learned from this group.

My brother was offered $28/hr since new hires usually start at $25/hr. He wanted $30, so I told him to counter with $33/hr, and after discussion, they agreed to $30/hr plus 2 weeks of vacation instead of 1. A great example of how advocating for yourself can lead to better compensation and benefits.

What are some success stories you or someone you know experienced?

That's great! Congrats on the smart advocacy! I like seeing how that worked out, your brother got a bit more, and the organization saved face by not giving him the 33 bucks. So in a sense everyone can claim a win, but for your brother the win is a tangible two bucks. Nice!

Thanks so much!

Awesome stuff, love to hear it! Good on you for being a resource for your brother, I wish I'd had that kind of support when I was first entering the workforce. My biggest negotiating success resulted in a 15% increase over the initial offer and an extra week of PTO. I felt like such a boss when they agreed without any further pushback.

like

That’s good! 15% is much better than the 3% I received. But hope it gets much better for you and me.

How do you advocate for yourself in a natural way / without seeming like youre trying to negotiate?

like

Not sure if that’s possible because I see it as part of negotiating.

that's great! love the advocacy

It was a good win!

I have a rental property and my tenant is asking me to change the fridge light burb. I live out of state and don’t have property manager locally. Is it bad if I ask them to change the fridge light burb themselves?

I’m pretty responsive for things they need help with like laundry machine got broken or pantry doors fell off. So I had sent people to fix those maintenance and repair issues.

But light burbs? Srlsy? They are grown up people (fresh out of college girls)

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?

I’m currently in a lease admin type role, in commercial real estate. I make a base salary of $50.5K with about $9k in bonuses. I’ve continuously received 7-10% raises over the last 3 years. I anticipate getting a promotion this year and would like to get closer to $60k for my base salary. I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? Thanks in advance!

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

Hello everyone I worked as a house remodeler before I got Covid now I am handyman/maintenance/property manager I would like an idea of what people are charging

I finally got a raise (after 10 years) from 45k to 50k with less than 10k in incentives while others who are just starting at lower positions make more than me..I want to bring this up but don’t want to come off in a bad way considering they finally gave me a raise this year.

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?
