Keep seeing posts about another round of layoffs before bonus payoffs. What does that even mean? Does the firm just say "we're letting you go and btw that bonus we told you about in June is now void"?

Have been at Morgan for 1 year and looking to come over to JPM for an ideal pay bump, but would like to get into IB type roll. Any insight on what I should expect or how to go about applying?
