Last year I lost a good job to Covid-19, so I had to take a job with the first company that offered me employment. I wanted to make it work but my boss is tyrannical and overbearing. I’m miserable working there. My question is: how I conceal my disgust while working with this person? What techniques can I put in place to handle his micro aggressions, while I find something better? Books, articles, ideas? It might take me a long while to find something else and I need to keep my cool.

Managers like this are awful.

Are you still working remotely with this person, or are you back in the office? Luckily, it’s a bit easier to hide emotions digitally in a lot of ways — even on video.

If you’re back to being in-person, it’s tough, I admit. Anecdotally, when I’ve had managers like this, it has worked to take something of a flat affect with them and dissociate any personal “ownership” of a project they may be overseeing; if they want a ton of changes done, okay, fine, whatever — but I’ll tweak it in my own way when it goes into the portfolio. 😉

Reduce stress elsewhere if possible so you can be even more chilled out to deal with this person. Best of luck. 💕

Last year when Covid broke, I received a couple of interview calls but ignored them as I felt the organization kept me at work when other companies cut short their HR staff so I should be with them even if with no appraisal. I started a new job recently and then had my PTSD seriously triggered, plus a panic attack.
