Lately I feel like most of my time goes to admin, coordination, and documentation rather than actual research. The work still matters, but it’s not the part I trained for. I know every field has this shift over time. How did you adjust when your role became less of the “core” work?

I changed jobs so that I was paid for that work rather than it being the thing that ate my time and wasn’t my deliverables

I just do the best I can do. I have taken promotions that meant more meetings and less research. But those promotions have always come with more money, so I got over it real quickly.

Yep that is the biggest part most people overloik

Graduated in 2020, wanted to be a graphic designer, took a job at a startup in a social media role. The boss called me the "r" word for not handling entire 13-ish accounts roster well by myself. I quit. Found a role as social media specialist. Realized (again) that I hate social media. Moved to in-house mktg manager, only to be a glorified graphic designer / someone to call the city to cut down trees. I job hopped too much, I feel my portfolio is empty. How do I restart again? I feel defeated.

Can anyone give me their honest opinion on working at Eli Lilly, the Indy site? I have a few coworkers that have worked there in the past but no one recently. I’m currently being recruited pretty seriously for a in-vivo technician position in the auto-immune team, but I already have a job lined up at Envigo as a small animal sx tech. Salaries would be comparable (Lilly would most likely be a little more with bonuses), but if the culture sucks, I’d hate to burn a bridge with Envigo.

What is one of the most frustrating parts of being a scientist or researcher?

I'll tell you what it is: referencing!

You have to do so much of it, and it's so annoying. You have to cite your sources, but there are so many different formats for citations! And then sometimes you don't even know how to cite something, and how are you supposed to know that unless you ask someone who knows? And even then, they might not be sure whether it should be an in-text citation or a footnote…
