what are your goals? based on how you posted it, it seems like salary is the only consideration (aka no other info provided). If comp is the only consideration, not worth it to take a decrease
is the lifestyle & WLB better? work more interesting? commute less? benefits? better career ops? make a thorough list of pros/cons
This is 100% the question. What do you want your days to look like. Money won’t satisfy IMO. Job I made the most at I was BY FAR the most miserable.
Ya Setting aside the pay the demotion really doesn't make sense to me. I mean sure you might not be familiar with the types of their investments but its generally expected that you would learn a new trade to some extent when you change company and that does not necessarily mean you will need to "downgrade" yourself.
Did you try to push it/what's their reasons? Or did you even try to negoatiate a conditional promotion plan that if you are performing well they can promote you in 3-6 months ?
I've never seen anyone going from big 4 manager even new manager to senior title in industry (normally it's the opposite way with a pay bump Bc that's the whole reason for the jump)
Are you sure this is a good opportunity for you/can you wait to explore more or maybe talk with a few more people before you accept the offer? Bc as far as i know wlb of senior fund accountant is similar (if not worse) than big 4 minus the flexibility.
Unless there are some distinguished perks at this new company that you really value.
Not trying to bring you down just worried you are going to regret later if you didn't think through these before you accept
I hated fund accounting for what it’s worth
The drop in title will be questioned in the future without a reason for it (like switch of industry, moving to finance, etc.). If it’s accounting to accounting, it does seem odd. If you know nothing about fund accounting, maybe somewhat understandable but you’ll have to always explain this. The other thing to point out is that it’s much harder to move to manager role in industry. Will you manage someone in this new role? If not, you may not get promoted until you get a direct report. Just a few things to think about - if it’s an option, it would be worth it to negotiate title all else equal.
Yeah….thanks!! :/
Why can’t you go from manager to manager in industry rather than taking a title step down
Um…I think it’s absolutely up to you. Personally I have always wanted to make manager at a big 4. It was a personal milestone.
But if I was more aggressive like “in 10 years or less I want to be CFO” I would leave at senior.
Negotiated and they bumped the offer to be more than what I make now. Thanks for the advice
Play the long game. If you’re moving to a hedge fund, the bonuses and future compensation ceiling can be much, much higher than public accounting (provided you weren’t looking to make partner). Bonuses at large hedge funds can be 50 to 200% of base salary. This is wildly more than most bonuses in public accounting
In what city does an M1 make 138 damnnn
It’s nyc. I think at Deloitte it’s either top or second top tier rating. Not super sure. Don’t really care anymore.
