I’ve been to 1 retirement party for CDs in 20 years. We don’t retire. We get pushed out.
Haha 'you get pushed out'. I think I'm with Creative Lead 1 on that. Possibly want to retire in my late 50s
I just keep shopping at skateboard stores and wearing sneakers hoping they won’t notice I’m getting close to 50. 😬
Hahah that's definitely a plan
Maybe not what you consider long-time but I’ve been telling my friends I’m retiring after my current job. In the way that athletes retire and then come back or change sports. And I mean it.
I’m 36, ambitious, and have somehow managed to grow alongside my company and have been here for 9yrs, taking advantage of RSUs and other benefits.
I’m dead inside. I told my boss and multiple execs this many times. The work has incredible opportunities but in-house is like Groundhog Day explaining the role of creative and how to (and how not to) work with us.
In in-house land there are people who are CDs and they just review design work. I’m a CD that pushes my team of designers and writers to think bigger, think of context, pitch ideas with influence. I’ve started directing the spots we used to hire directors for since I was doing most of the work anyways and have a natural inclination. I’m directing celebrities in spots concepted, written, produced and art directed by my small team. I also work on many projects that are directly with agencies (and I love them all). Sometimes I’m supporting new producers and project managers to deliver 360 campaigns or making sure they are communicating to all the teams and partners.
I approach all content and promo creation from the lens of brand and customer experience and am constantly looking to create an entire experience.
Why leave the game? I’ve only lost resources since starting despite the immense scale of the teams we support. Things are only getting more political and corporate and I can’t even enjoy the job, be proud of the work, or even step back and acknowledge all that I take on.
I can’t fathom taking on new jobs elsewhere until I take serious time away to regulate my entire being that has been so consumed by the many hats I wear. I’m planning on one more vest date in a few months and then disappearing into the desert to reset and assess the skills and desires I have. I am only networking and connecting with people to plant seeds and open my mind up to all the possibilities.
I’d rather take on a job doing menial work and brings me peace, joy, and equanimity than work for a dysfunctional company where I’m tethered to decision making of corporate leaders in this moment in time.
I’m a critical optimist and wish more than anything that I had more positive feelings about the situation I find myself in.
This was insightful, thanks for sharing.,
I’d love to either retire or semi-retire by the time I’m in my mid-50s. But it’s just as likely, if not more likely, that I’ll end up changing careers before then.
Nice! That seems like a good timeline
In 10 years when my 3.5 mil in the market turns into 7 mil. I’ll be mid 50’s by then. Between now and then I’ll pretend to care an ounce about my job that I don’t care an ounce about. Used to love this industry though. Now I just look forward to not having to pretend to show up.
Advertising does sometime feel so silly, I have moments where I wish I was doing something more important in my life. Anyway, thanks for sharing your journey with it
Copywriter -> ACD -> CD -> ECD -> GM -> My own agency-> Retire and write novels full time
I’m 53 and at the second-to-last step, should be retired by 60
Sounds wonderful! Hope you get to do it all :)
Right before cremation
I’ll freelance til I’m 60. Then build a laneway house in my backyard, rent it out and live off that.
love this for you!
For the first time in history, over 60 is the fastest growing group in the country. There are more over 60 now than under 5.
Nobody is going to retire
