Looking for advice…I currently make $85k + 35% bonus. I’m interviewing for a job that I now know pays $70k + 15% bonus. Obviously that’s a steep cut. The only reasons I’m still interested are that it’s in crypto operations which I’d like to transition to, and it’s back on the east coast closer to family. We want our daughter growing up with them around. Any thoughts on negotiating a higher salary? Or, any experiences on taking a pay cut and what went into your decision to do so? Thanks!

Not sure you want to be in a stable area like crypto in the coming months lol

likesmart

Yeah, that’s a fair point.

Consider negotiating more vacation time or other types of benefits. Getting other things that aren't as quantifiable as money can be more manageable.

like

I may try that. Thank you!

Is it worth it to you to take a pay cut to be closer to family? You may have to do so, at least to start. Where do you live now?

like

I really think it is worth it…it just feels weird since I know I’m worth more, not less than what I make now. My ideal would be to make a vertical move in my career when moving across the country. I live in Portland, Oregon and this position is with Fidelity in Raleigh, NC.

Is the cost of living where you are moving better or worse?

like

I’m originally from NC and I do miss it very much. It is beautiful, I agree.

You are right, it could end up being more in PP…

How guaranteed is the bonus?

like

That’s not always true, I work in asset mgmt. More prevalent for senior roles though and depends on revenue your desk brought in. Jr roles typically would only be hit say 10%-20% or so if you were top bucket

I think you should consider the stability of that industry in the long run. Would the cut be worth it?

like

Yes, Might as well consider the other options first. Best of luck!

Just ask for what you want. The worst they can say is no. It may not be too far out of reach honstly.

Switching from commission to salary!

I’m considering a less sales-oriented role that doesn’t pay commission. The new role will have a higher base but lower overall earning potential.

What % haircut should be expected? As an example, if I make 100k (base + commission) today, would it be realistic to ask for 90k (10% cut) + equity to make up the difference?

One of my friends works as a Director in Nagarro. She has been there for 7 years and has a CTC of 42 with total yoe 17. Per current trend this is low even though she is a constant top performer. She says that even though delivery people play a pivotal role, they are not paid well. In her team, she sees technical people earning 45-50 at 10-11 yoe. So the factor is 2.5 for delivery vs 4.5 to 5 for technical roles. Per her, this is quite common in Nagarro & she is not an outlier. ctd in comments

Is there any advantage to telling a company you are interested in working for in the future where you decided to accept an offer from? Or does it not matter? I accepted an offer a week ago with a great company (Company A) that for this season in my life seems like a great fit and only strengthens what I have to offer company B down the road. Company B just sent me a request for interview and I want to keep the door open with Company B but they were just very late in extending an interview.

So, a possible Blue Wave in November with some promises to reverse the 2018 tax cuts and maybe introduce at-death realization of capital gains - should mean a hectic November-January, right?

(Then again, I've been wrong before. Last time it was "So, a global pandemic that preys on the elderly, many of whom have a bunch of unused gift and GST exemption lying around since 2018 - probably a busy time for estate planning?" Was underwhelmed. )
