I joined while I was a biglaw junior. I don’t do it anymore, and it’s a lot of work, but I’m glad I served. Now I’m IHC in tech. AMA.
Happy to help! No one can bring family to Benning, you live in barracks. Some of the weekends at Benning you can’t leave, but mostly your time is your own on the weekend during DCC and people would schedule the occasional family visit. People did bring family to Charlottesville; they usually put single soldiers up in the on-site JAG campus hotel, and families up in the residence suites hotel down the road.
My best friend did it and loved to the point where he became full time and stopped his civilian job. He is now riding out the years till he vests full retirement.
This happens pretty often! The actual active duty work can be really interesting, especially if you hate your civilian job lol.
I think this highly depends on how demanding your civilian life is. Personally I found it to be very challenging trying to juggle the Army and my civilian job/personal life when I did it. The drill weekend and the AT could both fall on very inconvenient times for you, and you have no control over that. My personal experience is that it’s not worth the stress.
Don't do it.
Understood, thank you for your feedback.
Oooh! I'd love to do this too
I read your explanation above. Thank you! As much as I'd love to explore this i don't think I'm qualified. I didn't go to a prestigious school and my grades were shit. It sucks though. I would have loved to embed and try everything the army has to offer.
Good luck. It's pretty hard to get those slots. You can Google join JAG Reserve and it'll give you a list of things to do. You can also call your local Reserve base and ask to speak to the officer recruiter and see if they'll give you an email to reach out to the JAG.
