Looking to open a Roth IRA.. Merrill Edge or Vanguard?
My Roth 401k & employee match will be through Merrill Edge, that’s why that’s the debate.

They are both good options.

If you want to primarily invest in Vanguard mutual funds with minimal intervention that would tilt towards vanguard.

If you have BOA credit cards/checking account the ML IRA balance counts towards their preferred rewards program. Also, you can see and manage all your BOA/ML accounts including 401k and HSA with a single login if desired. You can still invest in Vanguard ETFs if desired.

Any advice / recommendations on BOA credit cards?

I believe edge is the self controlled version without management fees? If so and they have the investments you want, just go there if you want everything in one place. I have everything at fidelity for that reason. If it turns out you don’t like it, you can move a Roth to vanguard or anywhere else easily

I've had / currently have Schwab, TD, Fidelity, and Merrill.

Honestly, Merrill is my least favorite out of all of them in terms of UI and overall usability. Yes, it'll do what you need / want, but I've found the other brokerages to have much more robust platforms.

I use schwab for the mega backdoor as it's very convenient every two weeks. It won't let me do fractional trades though for some reason, I haven't investigated if I am doing something wrong though.

That is correct. I assume at some point they will all get where everyone wants them to be, but not yet. Fidelity doesn’t bother me. It literally takes a minute every other Friday to place an order so no auto is not a big deal but would be nice.

Hi fellow fish need some advice.

I'm planning a wedding and wondering if I should apply for new credit cards to maximize on points. If so, wondering what your recommendations are and or if there are new cards out there I haven't heard of yet. For context I probably have another 20k+ in expenses to pay still and my current cards are:

CSP
Marriott Bonvoy Boundless
Citi double cash
Random card (used to be uber)

When leaving a firm on your own terms, what needs to be done? For example, what to do with 401k? File transfers? etc.

I’m seeing lots of posts about really bad losses. If you trade you’re going to lose money - hopefully not all the time, but many positions will be mistakes. But you need a process to find ideas and manage positions. Two books you should read are “The New Trading for a Livinng” and “The Laws of Trading.” Both look at psychology, process, and risk in different ways that can help you work out your own process. The next 18 months will be much harder than the last 18 - time to start learning.

I like the Apple Card and considering opening one but want to see if there are better alternatives. It’s enticing that if I lose my card, I can instantly change the number so someone can’t use it. Plus no numbers means someone can’t randomly make a large fraudulent purchase.

$530k HHI, $250k cash on hand, $1.2M investments/retirement. Plan to buy $800-900k house as our first home, but thinking of the best approach given rates today. My thinking is that we (i) put $200k+ down and get a 5/1 ARM. (ii) put everything we save moving forward toward paying down the principal (after maximizing retirement accounts). Should be able to do $100k per year. (iii) If rates go down below 4.5ish % for 15 year fixed, refinance and stop aggressive payment. Thoughts on this approach?
