Manager Ratings: Generally speaking, in consulting, for a long term project, if there’s a team of 6 people (1 person managing everyone, and below that person 5 different people who are associates or senior associates) is there pressure on the manager to give at least 1 of the 5 associates/senior associates a bad review? Assuming everyone performed anywhere from good to great, would a lot of managers feel it would make them look bad to let all 5 have a good review?

I would say it is my job to make sure everybody gets a good review…

It’s a manager’s job to give poor performers feedback BEFORE review time so they can course correct. The sooner the feedback the better. You should set the bar and stick to it. If everyone is at or above the bar, great. People at the bar shouldn’t be pushed beyond it, but those that go beyond it should be rewarded. People that never get above the bar should be let go after enough documented feedback and opportunity to correct.

Honestly, what you’re describing sounds borderline sociopathic.

Lol….contrary to popular belief, it’s not our mission nor is it asked of us to make a team member’s life miserable just for optics.

Depends on the firm. I've worked at two over the years where we were required to rate staff at the same level on a bell curve.

Interesting. So, at one of those firms, if there’s 2 SAs below you and 3 associates, would the manager feel uncomfortable to give 2 SAs good scores? I could see how if there are 10 there’d for sure be that pressure in this bell curve environment, but would that pressure extend to just a team of a few associates and a few SAs under them for a project?

That happened in banking

No, just in the Career round table itself for bonus but not in each project

I currently do securities ops/accounting but want to move into a more client facing role. One of our marketing/client service associates got a promotion, so I’m guessing she’ll be doing higher level work, which may leave a gap for some of the work she used to do. How would I go about asking if I can work on that team in some capacity but still do my current role? I’ve only been there 1 yr and I know my current manager also has some higher level items in securities ops he wants me to do as well.

One of my direct reports has asked about going part time. They currently manage special reports in a bi-weekly publication, working closely with sales, freelance writers, and an internal designer. Job duties are primarily project management and editing/proofreading. As the first read on articles, they need to have an understanding of the material (business/regulation). Has anyone had experience with job sharing in this type of a role?

That time Bain was doing the same project as me for 3x the fees.
