How is performance measured at MBB?
McKinsey & Company Hey folks!
Was wondering what sort of life sciences projects does usually the Boston Consulting Group and McKinsey & Company take on?
Commercial, access and pricing, M&A, transformation, implementation? (all of them perhaps?)
Basically, what would someone with an LS background be mainly working on in these firms on a day-to-day basis?
Thanks!

Take the offer. I was in a similar position to you and applied whilst working. Weekends/ mornings / evenings / long lunch breaks for study. Got to final round but no offer unfortunately, although I got a solid T2 offer. It’s too risky to only apply to MBB whilst not having another job - you will be left without a proper job for a year. I’ll try from MBB every year, and build on the feedback that I got from last year rather than thinking of it as “failing”. Are you applying to other strategy firms (since you don’t want to do implementation)? At the very least it’s good interview practice!
Definitely take the job and keep preparing during your free time.
If it’s something you want as bad as you say you do, you’ll make the time to study.
I assumed you wouldn’t be working 60+ hours and finishing college at the same time. I certainly understand your concern, but I still think taking the job is the right move.
A lot of factors go in to landing a role at MBB, some out of your control, and I can assure you the level of pressure and stress will be a lot easier to carry if you aren’t feeling like it’s land MBB or be unemployed. Having the offer in hand allows you to recruit from a position of power because you will have stability whether you land MBB or not. (Obv this assumes you need to work to ensure your financial stability, if that is not the case then ignore that last bit. Still a good idea to start gaining relatable experience though.)
Additional info:
- My firm does mostly Implementation, I enjoy more Strategy.
- Gmat isn't the problem for me - or so do I think cause I got 730 last year.
- I've failled three times the Imbellus game from McKinsey.
- Already got into the final round for summer at BCG, for intern at Bain (but couldn't go for many reasons) and intern at JP Morgan.
- I believe, if it's up for me, that I'll be one of those "consulting for life folks". I don't see myself using consulting to jump into industry in 2-5 years. But I don't like Implementation, or at least not into the 2 projects I've worked so far.
What’s stopping you taking the offer and still studying for / applying for McK?
Don’t think of it as failing, sometimes it’s just not a fit. Also don’t consider it MBB or bust, perhaps there’s a better fit for yourself elsewhere, and there’s plenty other great firms out there.
With the being said, you do you, and I wish you the best of luck on whatever you decide to do!
Take the job but say you can’t start until March/April
It's not usual in Brazil - we usually finish our internship and we either renew, get an offer or don't get anything at all.
I think I've choose a compromise - I asked to renew as an intern for the next 6 months, so I can take more time to finish graduation - will still consume my time to prepare but I think it will look better on the resume that I'm still working rather than just a 6 months internship.
I also got into another project, this one seems really great.
But thanks for the advice tho, it was really helpful
