McKinsey and Bain 🐠, do you feel like your firm values you? I really like consulting, but I’m considering a switch since BCG’s culture is somewhat toxic.

Can’t speak for every office or every team (I’m in NYC) but yes, I genuinely feel our culture is built around a good-faith effort to make our lives happy and successful. I am not saying the success rate is 100% but there is a genuine effort there.

likesmartfunny

Even if “the company” only cares about culture to increase ROI, that doesn’t mean it’s the incentive for those you work with. Also, I would argue most good decisions in business lead to increased ROI in some way.. a top performer staying because they enjoy working at a firm = increased ROI but there is nothing wrong with that. If a decision is made that increases ROI and benefits employees, that’s a win win. Nothing wrong with that. You get your benefit, they get $. This is a good transaction.

“Top Tier” employers (MBB, IB, FAANG, Big Law, etc.) target insecure overachievers almost exclusively and then employ up or out cultures to keep them from ever feeling secure. This generally results in high productivity, but high burn-out rates.

And also terrible success rates with marriages & families 🤣

I think this question is funny. What do you mean does the company values you?

Let’s stop humanizing companies.

Culture matters, and differs slightly between firms — operative word is SLIGHTLY. The people that work at these 3 firms all graduate from the same schools with the same degree, go through the same recruiting process testing for the same skills, and are doing essentially the same job. Culture likely varies just as much within a given firm (between offices, practices, teams) as between firms. There ARE amazing, nice, genuine people in every firm who will value you but you might just need to seek them out.

That being said, I do perceive Bain’s brand and culture as being more “fun” though which on balance probably attracts people who don’t take themselves quite as seriously as McK / BCG...

Very well said

Yep. My basis for comparison is a previous role in the public sector, where all the talk about "caring for our people" was rarely actually supported by the structures and process. Bain is significantly better.

I feel extremely valued at BCG, much more so than in my previous career (military). I felt greater purpose there but at the end of the day I was replaceable in a second and it was known. At BCG I have mentors who are significantly invested in both my personal life and my professional development.

like

I’m a vet joining BCG soon—happy to hear this. The sentiment aligns with everything I’ve heard and experienced to this point.

like

I feel valued at BCG and strive to make sure my teams feel valued too. It’s a big company with many different sub cultures and not all are great. I’m sorry OP you don’t feel valued.

West Monroe claims to be people first. I’ve been here for about 2 years coming in as an experienced hire. I think they do a pretty good job at that claim. I worked at an MSP that was pretty toxic and the culture change WM provided was very positive.

Now I will find out tomorrow if they value my work, as I’m hoping to make the jump to SC.

Having recently moved from OW to Bain, I am incredibly surprised, impressed and moved by how much time and effort Bain is putting into making me feel valued and part of the family. The culture has also had a major impact on how I treat others (not that I used to be nasty at OW but Bain so just much more people centred and consultants genuinely seem happier here)

like

I really like it here. SWE but I feel valued and have several mentors who I’ve learned a lot from. I made sure to put myself in that situation though.

like

Okay I love working at BCG. Yes work can be long but never have I not felt supported by my teams. I think OP it’s about finding the right verticals and building the right relationships

like

Hahahahaha

Don’t get me wrong though. I feel very valued here. People genuinely care about me as a person and a young professional, and the Firm gives us great pay and benefit. I just don’t like to say that McK values me, but rather think about what that means for you and how you feel about the people that you’ve, at least tried, to be connected with. This place is awesome if you make it your way.

Mckinsey, nope! 🤣

I recently had an initial interview for a technical recruiter position. The guy on the phone stated that this is not a 9-5 job and long hours are expected. I proceed to ask how much PTO is offered and he said that is not recommend within the first 6 months of working and the harder you work the more PTO you receive. From that conversation, I saw instant red flags. Any thoughts?

Hello folks,

Just landed as a PR in Canada a month back.
Been interviewing for front end dev - 5YOE. Had been with Deloitte USI as a Consultant back in India. Applying for big 4's and tech firms but seems like they have been taking forever to review the applications (2-3 weeks now for few since applied!)

Have one offer from CGI as Sr.Con for 105k. Does anyone know how good/not good is CGI in terms of work, culture, WLB, perks?

Would appreciate any help in getting referred as well! Thank you

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
